Surround sound help (particularly wireless speakers)

Paul Waddington (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 14th May 2008, 12:52

Hi all

I`m about to move house and I`ve talked the missus into letting me get a surround sound system.

Does anyone have any recommendation for decent affordable systems, particularly systems with wireless back speakers (I`m talking around the £200-300 mark at the most).

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Cheers

Paul

Bloody hell! A post about DVDish things! :)

I`ve always wondered about these wireless speaker thingies myself. You still have to run power to them don`t you? I guess you still gain by not having to run a speaker wire from one side of the room to the other but then I haven`t got a power socket on the side of the room where my back speakers go so no gain for me I guess!

In my inexperience they are pretty crap. A few people I know have them and they are not really wireless. We did have a thread on this not to far back. I will try and drag it up.

If you are after a low budget system I can highly recommend the Denon system from Weymouth HiFi. Its £239 including delivery and I cant fault it.

I have 2. One for the lounge and one for the Garage. Also if its for a new house it should be easy to hide the wires. I just had anew carpet fitted and the wires have all been tucked away.

Paul - if you`re about to move house, will you be doing any decorating in the new place?

If so, I would recommend simply hiding the wires for the rear speakers if you do that.
I`ve not heard many good things about wireless speakers, but they may have improved in the last couple of years.

As Mister Smee says above though, still need power sockets near to where they`ll be though, which (unless you`re incredibly lucky) might be an issue.

I looked into wireless speakers and none of them looked any good and you still end u with wires around the place if they are not close to a power socket. In the end I got one of those Yammy sound projcetors and a sub. However, that option is out of your stated price range.

Hiding the cables is your best bet and they do special flat cables for going under carpets / laminate.

This is the cable we use when running to rears if it has to be hidden. £2 per meter.
