Need urgent advice regarding audio problem! Please help!!

BazMan (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 10th January 2002, 19:21

Hi, I finally decided on a multi region Toshiba sd210e. I connected it up and awaited the glorious sound and visual experience that swayed me to the Tosh. The vision is amazing but the sound.....nothing.

There is virtually no sound what so ever. I have connected straight forward scart to scart. You can just about hear the sound when the sound is on max on the TV. Again I have nothing using the cables that were enclosed with the player (analog). I have a Scart with video cables coming out aswell as the other Scart. I have tried connecting these to the Hi Fi and again the sound is barely audiable.

What am I doing wrong? Unfortunately the instruction manual is in French and German, of which I speak or read neither. I have switched between Bitstream, Analog and PCM. I imagine analog is just the cables, bitstream is scart to scart and PCM is scart to cable. Is this right? I still have no sound. I missing half of the experience, I must have sound. Please, please help me.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
BazMan

Can help me?

Hi Bazman,

Sounds like you`re having a nightmare - I`ll try and clear a few things up. As far as my knowledge goes bitstream is the Dolby Digital/DTS output from the digital output on your player. Analog is the sound output from the white/red phono type outputs and PCM is a standard 2 channel stereo output from the digital ouput (useful if you have an amp with digital input but no Dolby/DTS decoder)

Anyway, this still doesn`t explain your audio levels. I don`t own a Tosh I`m afraid but check and see if there is any kind of audio attenuation control in one of the menus which prevents the output being too loud so as not to blow TV speakers. It might be set too low.

If not then I`m not sure what to suggest. Was the player chipped for multi-region? Could something have gone a bit wrong when it was modified? Try it out on a different make of TV and see what happens.

Hope this helps in some way. Good luck !

Doug.
