All about Picture Quality.............

AndyPandy (Competent) posted this on Friday, 11th January 2002, 13:47

I have the Panansonic 36PF10 Widescreen TV with the Samsung 709 connected via RGB. My question is am I really going to notice a visible improvement in piture quality if I replace the DVD player for one that costs siginificantly more.

I recently saw a mate`s expensive sony DVD player connected to a 28 inch similar spec TV and the picture was visible better - OR is that because it`s a smaller screen.

Has anyone upgraded their DVD player on a big TV and noticed a big difference ??

Thanks in advance
PS. Sound is not a problem - thanks to the Sony amp (see my spec)

Yes,

Though the 709 was good in its day, it has now been outclassed by many players. Technology moves on, and chipsets are now made in house by many manufacturers. Sony dvd players have a good heritage of fine movie images, with better image processing and better components used in the output stages.
Buying a player from the mid range price span would give you a significantly better image, the Sony NSDV900 or its younger brother the NS700 are both excellent players with fine picture and sound.
Or you could try Pioneers 646a which boasts dvd-audio too
Or the Toshiba 510e, a little known, but excellent deck with dvd-audio that i saw at Richer Sounds for £299 Multi Region.

The choice is youra, but i`d do that big screen justice and get a new player, you don`t know what you`re missing!

Thanks for that.

I have been looking at other DVD`s - Most of which harp on the fact that they have 5.1 decoding and other good audio outputs.

These days with many people going down the amp avenue I really don`t care about sound out of a DVD player , only that it has a co-ax or optical out lead.

Can you recomend any out there that have their value spent on the picture quality rather than on their sound capabilities.

I would deffinately upgrade the DVD considering the size of the TV set you have. And, if youre only concerned with picture quality and dont need the onboard decoder then why dont you try and hunt down a Sony DVPS9000ES going cheap? I managed to find one on the net just after xmas for £650 and all I can say is WOW! The outputs and menus will cater for all your possible needs and the picture quality was stunning enough through S-VHS but now I`ve swtiched to RGB (after finding out why it looked s***e before) is utterly stunning. I know it seems steep but considering theyre listed at £1300 I was rather pleased to find it at that price considering the DVPNS900 is almost £500. Also, if you havnt already, do spend money on a quality SCART as they make a huge difference over those £5.99 moulded crap things that are standard fodder at Tandy etc. do a search on the DVPS9000ES on yahoo and check the reviews out, often there are comparsions with similar priced machines but the Sony seems to be heavily favoured in the picture department. Thanks for that. is th DVPS9000ES multi-region ? is there a software crack for it or does it need a chip upgrade. Same question applies to the DVPNS900, although I`m not sure what you meant about this player ?
