Some can but most can`t. They have to be very up to date with a DL drive to be able to read DL discs. If it doesn`t say it on the spec, then it won`t play it.

I have two players in the house that play DVD+R DL - one is my Liteon LVW-5006 DVD Recorder, but only because the 3rd drive it has had replaced is a modern SHW-160P6S drive, which plays DL discs. The other was a cheapo Wharfedale DVD player/Freeview combo - it was multiregion out of the box, and it turns out that it plays DL discs. No idea what drive it has in it, but it was well worth the £50 i paid for it a couple of years ago!

As they keep giving us more and more options for digital media playback, there is more and more to consider before rushing to buy something as simplistic as a DVD recorder.

Don`t most modern domestic DVD players do dual layer? Is there a big difference between home burnt DL and shop bought DL?

Yes there is. They are all designed to read pressed DVD9 discs, as we buy them, pre-recorded.

But they do not all read burned DVD9 (DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL) - this is a completely different kettle of fish, and not something many people think about until they start burning the things, then realise their old players don`t play them!

So what sort of age is "old"?

I`m only asking cos someone asked me about this today which is why I came back to this thread to ask daft questions. :)
