Scan SC-2500 audio level and RGB centering problems?

jfarrell (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 15th February 2002, 10:58

I`ve just bought one of these players and am very happy with the build quality and picture.

However, there are a couple of points I am not so happy with and being a first-time DVD owner I don`t know if these are normal. I`m using a SCART connection to the TV (a Panasonic TX25AD2 4:3 telly with Dolby Pro Logic).

1) If the SC-2500 is set to composite video output the picture is centred. When I switch it to RGB output the picture moves about half an inch to the right and is then off-centre.

2) The audio volume from the SC-2500 is very low compared to the VCR or normal TV. Even with the SC-2500 volume set to full I have to set the TV at about 75% volume to get decent audio level. For TV and VCR I usually set the TV to about 30% volume.

Do you think these are faults in the SC-2500?

Thanks.

It is not the player that is the problem, firstly most tv`s are centred in the factory using composite, so when you plug in rgb it is off centre (this happens on most tvs).
Unfortunatley rgb was not considered the preffered choice by manufaturers.
Secondly it is not that your dvd player is quiet, it is that your tv and video are set much louder.
DVD has a much larger frequency range for audio than tv or video so although it seems quiet it is actually correct( it`s not such and issue if you have dolby digital or dts set ups). This is why explosions are much more dynamic on DVD.

Hi,

I`ll check when I`m at home tonight, but I don`t think my VCR or games consoles are off-centre using RGB on the same TV.

Regarding the audio levels, the problem is that for normal listening I have to set the TV volume much higher for DVD than for VCR or TV viewing. Consequently when I switch off the DVD I am almost deafened by the volume of the normal TV channels. Is it really true that all DVD players are like this, and if so how do other people cope with the problem I describe?

Thanks.

I have a pioneer dv525 and it`s the same, I was`nt really bothered by it, but I have a full dolby digtial and dts set up now so it`s not an issue!
I have to say that my rgb picture being off-centre does wind me up!!

As promised, I`ve tested the TV`s RGB input with a different device.

My Panasonic VCR connected to the same SCART as the SC-2500 has a perfectly centred RGB picture.

So this seems like a fault in the SC-2500 to me.

I had the same RGB alignment problem on my hitachi widescreen. basically in the secret engineers menu there is a different alignment option for RGB, which you can adjust it with.

Have a search on the net for "engineers mode" or "service menu" or similar for your make and/or model of TV. and when you find it, be careful in there! don`t mess with any other settings.

as for the volume thing - it`s normal. the movie soundtrack is made for theatres, and has to cope with much greater extremes of loudness and quietness, so the overall volume is lower. Some DVD players allow you to adjust this by using dynamic range compression. The best way it just to turn the TV volume up though, or run it through a stereo/5.1 decoder

I`ve looked in the engineering menu for my Panasonic, but no joy.

There`s an `H-pos` adjustment, but strangely that has no effect on the RGB input at all! The TV picture, OSD and composite inputs all move but the RGB input stays firmly put.

I`m beginning to believe this is a common problem with RGB, but can anyone explain the technical reason for it? And if it is so common why don`t DVD players have an option to alter the RGB horizontal position themselves, as I believe some Playstation games do?

Thanks,

John
