Don`t do it ! Pioneer`s DV-R/-RW is the format to go for.

The Philips recorders (DVD+RW) aren`t ratified by the DVD Forum, and Sony (who`d previously been sitting on the fence between Pioneer and Philips) are now firmly in the -RW camp. DVD+RW compatibility with current DVD players is patchy to say the least, whereas DVD-R is compatible with the vast majority.

Amazing that the Philips decks have plummetted to less than half price - I think the industry knows that the big war will be between DVD-RAM and DVD-RW.

Avoid.

was tempted to buy one myself, but in a comparison with my existing panasonic dvd-ram recorder, it performed so slow.every time you record something, you have to wait 45 seconds when you stop recording before you can watch the recording.the Panasonic machine also offers 6 hours recording as opposed to 4 hours ofn Philips (you must take this into account due to the price of the discs!)Also, if you want to do editing of any description, then definateky forget it! Either go for the Panasonic or Pioneer recorders.I am personally waiting for the next gen Panasonic for my next recorder

The April Issue of What Video has a review of the Pioneer DVDR -7000 and has a comparison chart of all the formats.

Panasonic was voted the winner!

Can you hire or rent one now? Whats the cheapest DVD-R`s and how much?

I would like to get some Hi8 tapes transfered.
