Got your 7.1 system how you want it, think you're done with upgrades?

Everyone in the AV and home theater world is buzzing about Dolby Atmos. This object-based processing for sound allows sound engineers to move sound around the room three dimensionally rather than just pans.

What does Dolby Atmos bring to the table? By most accounts, a bit more spaciousness to the sound and the occasionally, "Hey, that plane sounded like it flew directly over me!" Does that sound worth spending a couple of grand and putting speakers on your ceiling? We doubt many would think so.
Yes, but, the opening of Star Wars!!!!!

I think the biggest jump in recent Home Theatre sound was discrete surround channels. Having 5.1 in the home really took Home Theatre to the next level and made it a comparable experience to cinema sound.
A lot of new introductions seem to be a bit gimmicky: extra sub, extra rear surrounds and now 3D sound above you. Only a few big budget films are mixed for new sound formats, anyway, so you often don't get the extra benefit from the thousands of pounds that you have spent.

I actually think 7.1 is quite good, in some movies anyway. Gives you more of a feeling of lots of things going on behind you. But you are right, so few movies use the 7.1 well enough, it's like 3D visuals, not a lot around that takes advantage of it.

When I was shopping for a new amp I almost got carried away with 7.1, networking, apps, etc. But, in the end, I saw sense and just went for a highly rated 5.1 system, without all the extra bells and whistles.
