Speaker / Amp Impedance (Ohm) Question

slart (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 26th March 2002, 09:04

Hi,

I`ve got a Yammy DSP 620AX amp with two impedance settings. I have Wharfedale Diamond 8.3s and 8.1s that have imp of 6 ohm, though manual says that they are compatible with 8 ohm amp out puts.

The amp has two settings:

A) Fronts - One main set of speakers then each speaker imp must be 4 ohm or over, Centre 6 ohm or over, Rears each 6 ohm or over.

or

B) Fronts - One main set of speakers then each speaker imp must be 8 ohm or over, Centre 8 ohm or over, Rears each 8 ohm or over.

Now, do I go for option (A) which is all 6 ohm or under which is the Whar speciifed nominal imp or do I go for (B) which is all 8 ohm or under which is over the Whar quoted nominal but the manual says that they are "compatible" with 8 ohm amps.

Is there a sound quality decision here? Is option (B) going to damage my speakers?

Your thoughts very much appreciated!

Thanks,

Slarti

Slart,

Go for the 8ohm setting. The 4 ohm setting is for when you`re driving speakers that are actually 4 ohms or less (very rare these days), and as such are a stiffer load for the amp. With the Wharfeys connected, flicking the switch will make no difference in sound quality, power output, or dynamic power whatsoever.

Use the 8ohm setting, this is for all speakers UP TO 8 ohms.
You`d only use the 4ohm setting if you were using a second pair of speakers on the B outputs which were lower than normal, as in 4 ohms or less.

I think thats right, from my DJ experience it should be anyway! (i hope).

Richard where the hell are you??????? :-)
