What`s the best to buy?

Bobski (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 23rd November 2000, 11:50

Ok people,

Looking through all the threads its clear you ALL have your pref`s.

I am looking to buy a player (must be multi-regional)....

I have a pro-logic amp....(old kenwood KR-V7050...old but works well)not dts and a 28`` Widescreen (philips)

I was looking to get the Scan 2000,......is it a POS?

But does anyone know of a player with similar features (but better) im lookin on going up to around £400.

Do you need the dts for an older pro-logic system?.....more advice on this if pos.

In terms of what to buy thats an impossible question.

However your amp if it does not have a built dolby digital or DTS decoder it will not give you five channel surround. Dolby pro logic is i think only two channel surround. If you dont want to buy a new amp you will have to buy a player with a built in decoder. Dont worry about DTS there are no discs to that actually support it in region two.

if you want a good player with a built in decoder try the LG 3550 from techtronics they can also hack it before you buy it. Hope this helps, Steve

Thanks Steve,

Yeah i know what you mean by impossible....!

I wondered about the Pro logic cos i output my pc dvd to the tv and plug that through the amp and it plays through ok?......i assumed (perhaps wrongly) that the pro logic sound decoder in the amp would do the same for a player.
Damn this thing cost £400.....ok so it was 6 yrs back now....mebe ill have to see whats new out there.

I dont think the Scan has this decoder built in.......or does it?

MINEFIELD...........!

Bobski, it will!
Dolby ProLogic is encoded in the standard stereo soundtrack.
You have 3 independant channels:
Left, Right and rear (the two rear speakers play the same thing at the same time)
The centre speaker is an extraction from the front l/r audio channels.

Dolby Digital and 5.1 have two independant rear channels as well as a front left/right. I believe they also have a seperate centre channel for the vocal on the front (correct me if I`m wrong there guys).

Listening to Pro Logic is great, but when you hear a Dolby Digital or 5.1 amp on the go with a good quality DVD you will be AMAZED!
It`s like the jump from Nicam to Pro Logic.

Hope this help, and a player to buy?
(It doesn`t have a built in decoder, but does have digital outs for DTS/dolby digital and most amps now have a decoder built in)

There is only one choice!
And it`s only £200!
And it plays anything you wanna throw at it!!

What is it?...::sigh::

Pioneer 717.

Also ditch your Pro-Logic amp and get Dolby Digital, you won`t regret it.
The difference is comparable to stereo and mono, colour and B&W, Man United and Man City etc etc
