Anyone have MIsiion M7DS rears?Info?

CAPTAINSHADWELL (Competent) posted this on Friday, 24th May 2002, 19:20

Just wondering if anyone has these speakers as rears like I do, and if so do you have them on a stand, shelf, attached to wall and so on? Do you find they do a good job? What height do you have them off the floor and so on. Just after any general info off people who have them.

Cheers v much.

About 6 foot up, on on side walls (on stands actually !) towards the rear of the room.

Excellent : non-directional (which is what rear speakers should be ideally) and great sense of ambience in surround sound audio.

I have my 77DS`s screwed to the wall, and about seven feet up, which is more for aesthetic reasons, rather than audio - still sound cracking though. Mounting on the wall is really easy (two screws) and gives a really nice tight fit, which tightens the sound also.

HI Clayts, what stands do u have for them as I even phoned mission and they were really really crap -- had a feeling i got through to a secretary who didnt have a clue what she was on about - -but even they couldnt recommend any stands. Just curious into type, price and where they can b found.

Thought about screwing them up but at the mo there is a wall to the seating area`s right but not to the left, so thought id go for stands but as of yet have not found any.

May be a bit cheeky but do any of you have photos of your set ups you are willing to share?

Cheers Lads

Mine are far from perfect (I`m waiting for Westy to visit with lots of tools !) but at the moment they`re balanced on top of normal speaker stands, on top of other things (eg one is on a chest of drawers, the other on a coffee table !) : sadly my front room is not too conducive to a perfect home cinema layout, so I may have to buy the house, and knock a few walls down :-)

Failing that, I may take the ceiling option.

Oooooh, cheeky!
Try this http://www.thehallmans.org/cinema.asp
Only just lashed this up to stick in a couple of piccys of the rears - as I say over there, I`m considering moving them forward into the room a bit more, but the ceiling thing works well, and they do tuck away nicely.

Cheers Rich - -They dont look too bad on the ceiling, quite good in fact; but I cant work out where ur wire is but that shouldnt be a problem anyway. Dont know if its the camera shot but the room looks pretty big - -is there any trouble with the sound with them so high in what looks like a big room? How come ur moving them further into the room?

Also, Clayts, what magic is Westy hoping to perform?R u optiung for the ceiling thing as well?

Mine is shocking at the mo - -have one on the arm of a sofa and one a foot less in height on a foot rest tihng to the side of the sofa - -absolutely terrible as u can hear exactly where the speakers are and so on. Does anyone know if someone just makes tall stands or are they for some reason not sensible?

Cheers again Lads and cheers Rich for the pics - I appreciate the effort.

Shads, take a look at that page of mine again - I`ve added a plan of the whole room, so things may make a bit more sense. Click on the image to see a large version.
The speaker cable can just be seen on the brick wall - it`s black. Other wall cable is white, and runs from the corner of the room to the speaker. As I hadn`t finalised speaker postions, I didn`t splash out on the self adhesive flat stuff, but bought a 50m reel of white twin and earth from B&Q. The black cable is the same cable, but with black insulation tape wrapped round to hide it a bit. Bodge, bodge, bodge!

Speaker movement - currently, the sound from the surround channels can be a bit seperated from the rest of the action, so I want to move the speakers so that they are over the sofas. There is no problem with them up on the ceiling - the ceiling seems to reinforce the sound a bit, too. I tend to sit on the floor near the fireplace (when the fire`s not burning!!) if I want the "best" experience. The whole setup has had to be as family and dog friendly as possible, hence the compromises - yes I know the speakers would be better on stands, yes, the sofas aren`t in the best viewing position, etc. However, it works as a room, and I have plans for a full on home cinema with projector in a different (larger) room.

Richard,

Very interesting i must say. You seem to have the perfect room layout as far as home cinema goes, (well the walls could be angled slightly to stop standing waves and all that - but thats just being silly!), but one thing, the Misions are designed to be wall mounted and higher up than most speakers - their design and shape as you know means they can be hung the right way up, inverted updide down, or even attatched to the ceiling! I`ve herad them on stands, and this makes them a bit too easily heard, which kind of goes against their design principle.
You know all this already anyway, but just for those who are having their first M7DS/77DS experience! Also they should fire across the room on side walls, not into the room, unless of course you have 6.1 (like i have).

One other thing Rich, what is the soundstaging like at the front, i notice the front three are behind the tv, i`ve always been in the party where the front three are parralel to the tv screen, or the front left/rights are brought forward slightly of the screen and toed in for a nice, deep and expansive soundstage. I have my fronts like this and it sounds superb, the sub is just to the right of my right speaker, one foot away from the back wall, and the port fires at the side wall which is 2 feet away, the response is excellent. Still, yours is room friendly, and i`m sure we`ll talk about this offline as we usually do!

All the best mate

Westy

BTW, where did you get the software for the room diagram? If i can download a copy i`ll knock up a piccy for you.Cheers
