LG 3350 Layer Change

Darran (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 26th November 2000, 19:17

I`m keen to buy this player (it will be my first!) but was a bit concerned about comments in some of the threads that it had a slow layer change, (particularly with Gladiator).

Does the LG generally have a slow layer change or is it just with this disk?

I was also wondering how much the layer change speed actually affects viewing. Surely DVDs are written so that the layer change occurs at the end of a scene?

I can`t speak for the LG3350 personally, as I own an Aiwa 370 a.k.a LG 3XXX, so you can presume the LG 3350 will have the same affliction. There is indeed a very noticeable delay when the layer change occurs, the picture and sound freezes for nearly a whole second before continuing, but apart from that I cannot fault it.

But there is nothing else close for the price only the Wharfedale who’s transition between the layers is seamless, but it’s just too damned noisy to live with especially in films like the Green Mile, the drive sounds like a coffee grinder, plus the remote is poor and will not function unless you aim directly at the player. But if you have a cabinet with a glass door to hide the beast it may be worth considering.

Either go for the Aiwa or LG, or grab an extra ton and buy a well know branded machine. Study these forums and make up your own mind.

Where are you guys buying your players from?
My 370 doesn`t freeze whatsoever on Gladiator!
Plays it like a dream!
And even the one I thought I had problems with (R1 3 Kings) Plays perfectly..it was my telly that caused the problem!

Seriously... anyone who has a problem with the Aiwa, please send it to me @ DCMM1J[at]moc.LOA with chapter/time/disc etc. so I can check it out for them!

By the way...if ya wanna buy a 370, mention that too (I got a supplier)

AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!

Well I haven`t noticed problems on any DVD so far, but a friend of mine who I recommended the machine to (and he bought 2) had the following comments:-

ABBREVIATED QUOTE
Just watched another film and there is hesitation after about an hour (I think he`s referring to the layer change - don`t know which film). Again not too bad. Didn`t happen on Gladiator (R2) though.

The Talented Mr Ripley (R2) produced pixelisation later in the film (near the layer change I think)
UNQUOTE

He is new to DVD so layer changes might have come as a shock :-)
So, no probs with Gladiator, but perhaps you could try TT Mr Ripley (R1) Jimbo?

Again no probs here

Aiwa rocks!!!
Jez

P.S. I wonder whether Aiwa could be persuaded to issue a firmware update with SVCD support?

Don`t have it Jez.. and neither do my mates, so sorry can`t try that one!

Dunno, but I`ll be talking to their Sales support dept after the new year about it! (waste of time just now....Retail`s too damned busy!)

And check out Troll`s LG site! It`s "Spanking Gorgeous"!!

AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!

Well Jimbo, you must indeed be graced with gods own player.

Here`s a thread from an earlier disscussion

Loz Aiwa 320 >“It takes nearly a second on gladiator just after Commodus drinks his tonic on chapter 14...”

It Troll’s LG 3350 >“Loz - Just had a look again at Gladiator and I have to agree with your layer change comments,...”

So my Aiwa and Troll`s LG does it, now go and check yours again.

Remember mine`s nearly a brother to yours at only 900 units apart!

Watched Gladiator all the way through today and especially looked for the layer change again in chapter 14. Guess what no delay! No detectable pause at all.

I couldn`t believe it myself so I scanned back, played that bit again, and the pause was back again. So I scanned back even further (2 or 3 minutes) and tried again but the pause was still there.

Maybe I just got lucky the first time or perhaps there is some sort of read-ahead buffer. Dunno, probably talking crap.

The dual layer`s of a DVD isnt perfect and is inconsistant on a lot of player`s due to the incredible speed of the drive (even slow player`s).

Does it work?

Yes, Live with it.

Although I have never seen a layer change on my 505, the 1/4 of a second one I had with the scan 2000 was nothing to annoy me.

HITACHI 505 ROCKS!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your replies.

I just wanted to make sure that the layer change didn`t spoil the viewing. It seems as if I was worrying over nothing. I`ll just have to buy the player and see for myself!

Weird isn’t it, just like IT Troll said, watch the whole film and it`s perfect, jump to chapter 14 and it pauses during the layer change, which means to me the machine`s well capable of performing a layer change seamlessly, can I see a possible firmware fix on the horizon?
