Broadband/Dial Up on same line?

James Tuff (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 30th June 2003, 18:58

Hi all, I have 2 PC`s in 2 different rooms, is it possible to have broadband on one and dial up on another at same time?

Yep, it`s perfectly possible. ADSL broadband is effectively a separate connection, even though it runs across the same wires as your normal phone connection.

However, why bother with dial-up at all? I`d much rather share the broadband between the two PCs, using a dedicated ADSL modem/router or something along those lines.

Thanks for the reply, how can this be done? I am with Pipex, do ISP`s charge an extra fee for this?

just get a broadband router, like the Netgear DG814, stick a network card in each of the machines and then connect them to the router with a couple of CAT5e cables.

No. The ISP just provides the connection, they have no way of knowing how many PCs are connected at the other end. The router takes care of all that.
