Getting broadband (Yippie) DO I need firewall?

niteowl (Elite) posted this on Friday, 4th July 2003, 15:53

Getting broadband do I need a firewall - Eclipse say theres a firewall built into their router but then it costs a lotta more money than a modem/starter pack they`re doing.

Also can firewall slow down the broadband speeds?

Any help would be appreciated.

a firewall will not slow down your access speeds at all, they are however essential on dial up & broadband for a very good free firewall go to www.zonelabs.com
a good anti-vrus is also essential avg is excelent & free www.grissoft.com

HOPE THIS HELPS

Absolutely - got to have a firewall. In fact anybody with an internet connection should have one. Bite the bullet and get a decent one like Zone Alarm (see Ogster`s post) or Norton.

I`m naughty - I don`t use Firewalls on my Broadband connection, but have never had any probs.

sygate firewall is also good and it`s free.
remember to check your shields on www.shieldsup.com
you will probably find that one port is open and there is a utility on there to close it called un plug n pray

Having struggled for the best part of a day figuring out the problem, the free download of Zone Alarm does not allow internet connection sharing - so it looks like I`ll have to buy Mcafee after all!

when setting up a shared network wouldn`t it be easier to get an external hub for about a tenner then configure the machines indipendantly of each other, tho to be honest i`ve never done it myself so if someone more technichly minded reads this they may be able to help.
