One of my PCs has a Belkin F5D7000 card and works fine. Is your wireless access point functioning correctly? The wireless cards are easy to install and setup, providing the access point is up and running without problem.

What is this red screen? Are there any error messages?

Hi
All I was told that I needed from diixons was the wireless desktop and note book cards.they said that that was all I would need to be able to use the broadband from the main computer onto the laptop providing that the main computer was switched on.there was no mention of a wireless access point so do i need one of theese as well?.If so have been well misinformed by dixons and am going to be lucky if i get this up and running for my son for xmas,as the laptop is for him.I thought I would install the 2 network cards for him so he could use on xmas day.
any help much appreciated as I am well flumoxed now.
cheers sandi

Yes, wireless cards need a wireless access point (WAP) to connect to, which in turn is connected to your DSL (broadband) connection. From what you`re saying, I`m guessing you have a USB modem which is why the need to leave the main computer on, right?

As far as I know, most WAPs use Ethernet to connect to a modem which connects to your internet service. Does your modem have an Ethernet port? If so then it`s a simple case of buying a WAP and connecting/configuring it.

I have a Netgear DSL modem connected to a Linksys WirelessG router (WAP) with Ethernet. My main PC connects to the WAP via an Ethernet cable, while other laptops/computers in the house use Belkin wireless cards.

Let us know what modem you`re using and if it has an Ethernet port and we can go from there. If it doesn`t have an Ethernet port then it looks like you may have to invest in a combined modem/wireless router.

I also have the Belkin cards model F5D7010, put them in 3 laptops, and according to the destructions you can connect without an access point as long as it is just 2 computers.

Have found the settings here in Windows XP, Double click the radio icon in the system tray, the available wireless networks will be displayed, click advanced in bottom corner and choose, computer to computer (ad-hoc) network. And OK

Then on the available networks bit at the top, click configure and select the same, computer to computer (ad-hoc).

A couple of Tips, make sure your workgroups/domains are the same on both PC`s and that they use the same frequency channel, on the general tab, click configure, then click the advanced tab and make sure the IBSS channel is the same on both. If that doesn`t work Try adjusting it, I had a load of problems with ours but adjusted the channel and problem solved, seems you can get interference from your cordless phone.

Once you get the cards seeing each other, the windows home networking wizard in accessories/communications should sort out the networking and internet connection sharing bit for you. just don`t let it automatically find cards+modems as it always picks the wrong ones, select them manualy and run it on the PC first, restart, then run it on the laptop. Another handy thing you can then do is turn on file and printer sharing this will allow you to print from the laptop and it will come out on the printer attatched to your PC, assuming you have one of course. Might be worth waiting until after xmas for that though, get the important bits working first :)

Any problems, give Belkin support a ring, they are more than happy to help you out.

Let us know how you get on, Merry Christmas.

All the best

Ger.

Just to re-iterate, two PCs can network peer-peer with just wireless cards, you DO NOT need an access point unless you have more than two PCs/Devices connected to the wireless network.
