NTL Broadband Speeds Up - now from 8th March 2005 onwards

Markybhoy (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 13th February 2005, 22:23

Just read this from another forums site http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds16748.html
Heres hoping with a little gentle persuasion that NTL will drop the admin fee for existing customers.

Not only is there a one off charge of £25 to upgrade but also new monthly usage allowances will (may) be introduced. Details here, won`t affect me though - 5 GIG per month :/

5Gb per month for 1MB
30GB per month for 2MB
40GB per month for 3MB

Sam.

Yeah there`s a few threads been going on ntlHellworld (Cable Forum) about it the last few weeks. The caps aren`t new, it`s 30gb a month now (1gb a day) and has been for ages. It`s only the lower level (light user package) that will lose out by getting reduced from 30gb to 5gb. The 30gb cap shouldn`t worry most people, it`s the illegal downloaders who it`ll hit.

I`ve been monitoring my usage for the last 20 days, and only ysed 1.5gb up to now, so nowhere near the limit, and I`m on the net lots.

It sounds like they`re going to scrap the £25 upgrade fee, due to lots of us giving bad feedback about them not looking after existing customers as well as new ones, especially as other ISPs are upping speeds now too.

Shouldn`t be too far away by the look of it. :)

Click on the network/modem icon in your system tray, that will give you the upload/download since your last boot.

That`s quite an old link -I thought they were actually giving a date when this was going to happen..

Are these supposed limits NTL put on inclusive of upload AND download or is it download only? When I signed up for NTL Broadband the agreement was UNLIMITED-and i`ve not had any official notification they`ve changed those terms and conditions, so if thy tried to stop my service, they can go whistle for the 37 quid a month I give them AND the 100 quid for my phone lines!!

It`s about time they upped their lousy upload speeds 1.5mb download with only 256kb upload is pretty poor.

Upload speeds are supposed to be increasing as well, but rest assured it isn`t massive...

The changes are due by 31 March 2005 by all accounts, and it really depends upon who you believe as to whether the £25 charge is payable.

Thinking about it, I have no real problem paying it - I`ll have gone from 600 KB to 2 MB (ie tripled + a litle bit) in less than a year at no cost to myself, so can`t really grumble about a one-off fee. However, I will threaten to leave if I have to pay it :D

If youre happy with the service and have no plans to leave them, ring them ask them if they will waive the fee, if not cancel your contract and then re-connect in the same phone call. Its a bit of faffing around, but it will save you 25 sovs. Its the way i got the free Xbox in their last promo.

Only catch is you start another 12 month contract.

I have to say, it is amazingly annoying how they treat new customers as opposed to the suckers they already have.

I`ve been using a program called TrafficStatistic, it`s pretty easy to use, and runs in the background, you can get a report anytime with a couple of clicks. It tracks how much data you send and receive, and where to and from.

As for the NTL upgrades, there are NTL staff on the Cable Forum I go on, some of who are working on the upgrade project, not final date for the upgrade has been set, only as the announcement last year said that it`s be in the first quarter of this year, which gives them until the end of March.

The feeling seems to be that it`ll be in the next 3 to 4 weeks and that the project is in it`s final stages, before being rolled out. You might need to reboot your modem for it to pick up the speed increase, that`s what I had to do last time. There`s a quick speed check here you can use to check you speed hasn`t increased (although we`d probably notice the jump to 2mbit...lol)

Emily, the 1gb a day caps have been in place what must be a couple of years now, it`s in the terms of acceptable use statement, but they haven`t been enforcing it up to now except for the people who really take the mick. The caps are download only I believe, not upload. Talk has been had over tha lst few weeks of it being a hard cap (as opposed to a soft cap as they called it before), where they were going to enforce it. But now it seems to have lessened to a soft cap, but not as lenient as they have been.

They just seem to be wanting the heavy downloaders / pirates off the network, as it`s sold as a domestic service, which can only be good for the general user as it will make the network more reliable / speed things up (especially if you happen to live near a heavy downloader or two). :)

Great news on the upgrade (unless you`re a 300K customer) at Cable Forum - no charge to upgrade and a mild boost to upload speeds :)

14th March - 28 days and counting.....
