Page 1 of Is 54 Mbps wireless good ?
PCs & Mobiles Forum
Or should I look for better ?
I know very little about networking and I am sure I have seen faster set ups than 54 Mbps or is that just marketing bull ?
I am thinking about buying a Belkin wireless modem / router the same as this one but bundled with this USB adapter all for £79.99 to connect two Pc`s to my 1 MB ADSL line.
I need a modem router as my current modem is a USB connection and all the routers I have looked at need LAN.
This package seems to be good value from a well known manufacturer and I think it was with a lifetime warranty.

The 54Mbps is the wireless LAN speed (the connection between 2 or more computers). This will be well fast enough given that most (I think) work networks are 100Mbps (and the router will probably be 100Mbps if you were connecting using a LAN cable). With your 1MB line you will be using 1/54th of the overall LAN speed.
You are right though - now you can get 108Mbps routers which have dual 54Mbps channels.
Hope this helps.
Frank
EDIT - forgot to say that I have a Netgear DG834G wireless router, Netgear wireless PC Card and Netgear wireless USB adapter that run at 54Mbps and are excellent pieces of kit.

So the 54 is more than enough then.
Cheers duder. :)
Just been looking at extra wireless cards and adapters and there are a few 11Mbps 802.11 b models around at less than half the price of the 802.11g equivalent so if my router is backward compliant with 802.11b I take it from the answer above I will not notice any loss of speed or quality with one of these older cards or for the sake of an extra £10 - £15 should I go with the 802.11g?.

RE: Is 54 Mbps wireless good ? Part 2
It depends what you want to do with your wireless network. If all you want to do is share an internet connection then the 11 Mbps card/adapter will be fine, but if you want to share large files between the PC`s then you may be better off getting the 54 Mbps card/adapter.
Like duder, I also have the excellent Netgear DG834G. We have a PowerBook and two Windows desktops connected via a Belkin 54G wireless card and ethernet cable and it works flawlessly! :-) Wireless speed connecting the laptop to the desktop (via the Netgear) is good. All for just £69.99 from Amazon.

It is just for internet connection sharing so the 11 Mbs would be a cheaper option.
I am holding back on the Belkin set up as I am with Wanadoo and I found out they are giving a free wireless modem router and adapter if I pay an extra £4 per month which will also include all evening and weekend phone calls to landlines for free , no minimum contract either so if it`s crap I just cancel it and send the wireless set back.
Sounds ok to me so I ordered it today and should be with me soon.

One thing to be aware of though is that the signal range and quality is not as good on `b` as it is on `g`.
Also a very happy DG834G owner :D
All the best
