Can anyone offer some advice i have a video file with this ".hdtv-lol" at the end of it
the file plays perfectly well on media player but i can`t get both sound and picture onto disc using nero 6. I get a pefect picture but no audio, i have tried using virtual dub but that says "no audio compressor can be found" and TMPGEnc does much the same .
any advice greatfully recieved
Thanks

It`s an .avi file. It will play on a DVD player that has DivX capability no problem, but I don`t know how to make it work on a regular DVD player.
If your DVD player does all you have to do is burn it to a CDR or 8 or so to a DVD as a data disc and you`re away.
If you don`t have a DivX-capable player, then they`re a really good buy - usually about £30-£80.
The only files mine can`t play are episodes of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 - I just get audio.

It will be an .avi file (hdtv=hi def tv cap and lol is a capping group). IIRC they usually cap in divx but can`t remember what they use for audio - maybe OGG?

Thanks
also is there a way of compressing vcd files to get more than one 42min prog on a disc?

"lol" use Xvid, as opposed to DivX - make sure you have downloaded the Xvid codec to your PC.
Before getting it to play on any hardware DivX you may need to unpack the bitstream - this is what I have to do for some files. I use MPEG4 Modifier for this - works a treat :D
Then just burn the files to a CD or DVD as an ordinary data file and your DivX player can pick it up.
