Pipex (free) Upgrade - Finally got mine!

Miles (Elite Donator) posted this on Monday, 23rd May 2005, 18:50

My router says:

DownStream Connection Speed 2272 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 288 kbps

Even though my Pipex account says Solo 1000

Speed test indicates varying results though
Will test a download from somewhere like Apple.com and see how I get on.

EDIT - getting between 140 & 155 KBps...not bad!!!!!

Is that the free upgrade they were giving?

My dad got a letter from them saying that they was upgrading the service to 1mb for free, but if he wanted to pay £15 or so they would upgrade it to 2mb but a limited account. I just checked his computer and he`s still on 0.5mb so far.

Hi

Yeah its the free upgrade - I didn`t see the point in paying the £15 really.

It said on the Pipex account page that BT were upgrading my exchange in April...and I`ve finally got the upgrade on 23rd May!
So its worth seeing when they`re upgrading his local exchange using the Pipex account manager.

I`m a bit confused by this talk of exchanges being upgraded - I wonder if anyone here can clarify a bit for me?

I`m an existing Pipex customer. When I had ADSL installed last December, a line test showed that I was limited to 1 Mb/s as a result of the distance from the exchange. I`ve had a look at the blurb on Pipex`s website about the upgrade and see that it refers to BT upgrading the whole of the Wholesale network.

Does this mean that people like me who have up until now been limited by distance to 512k/s or 1 Mb/s will be able to receive 2Mb/s and upwards? Or is it just the case that BT are making it possible for ISPs to offer higher speeds to customers who are already within range to receive them? :/

Mark

Basically BT are trying to give people the best rate available for their line. But the ISPs are still charging you for whatever speed you choose.
The upgrades that are currently taking place should give you a 1Mb line for the same price as your 512kb line.

You may also find that their upgrades mean a bigger possible bandwidth because of the
improvements to the lines...but its fairly rare.

I was paying 34.99 with Pipe for a 2Mb line. I`ve just changed my isp to adsl4less - i still get a 2Mb line but for £14.99.
Its capped at 2Gb per month download but every extra Gb costs £1.75 - whilst i do d/l stuff i `d still be saving a fortune - i could effectively d/l 12Gb of stuff and still save on what i was paying Pipex

Cheers Miles - I suspected that was the case. Ho hum - I`ll have to make do with my 1 Mb/s connection. (Although in all honesty, for what tend to use it for, that`s probably plenty - just greed on my part wanting a faster connection! :p )

Neilliboy, I`m still with pipex but have been wanting to move to either onetel or adsl4less(for the last month or so. Decisions, decisions :/ ). which would be cheaper than the £24 appx I`m paying pipex for 1Mb unlimited.

How you finding adsl4less?

MilesR: didn`t you fancy opting for the 2MB line limited usage for same price or even consider moving? I know we`ve discussed it in the last few months.

Cheers niteowl.

I know its more than quite a few people pay, but ive found the NTL cable BB to be pretty much bullet proof.

Apart from the occasional mail server outage, I leave my computer on more or less all day and havent had a service interruption for years.

2mb, with a 30 gig flexible cap (if you go over they dont mind unless you do it a few months on the trot)

Dear Gamesmaster,

My Friend keeps talking about `Girls`.
What is `Girls` and is it XBox compatable?
