PC Wireless Advice Needed
Hi, I have an Aldi PC approx 3 years old connected to a BT line with a BT Broadband modem. I now want to purchase - & setup - a wireless router (with it`s own firewall). Can anyone recommend a quality reliable wireless router and the best place to get one from - preferably one with an easy setup? Also if someone could explain what is required to set one up? Do I need a network interface card? Thanx coolerking.
Hi
Can highly recommend the Netgear DG834G (I bought from eBuyer about a year ago I think).
It is very reliable, has a good interface and its own built-in firewall, and very easy to set up.
It has 4 ethernet ports on the back as well...so if it will sit next to your PC, and assuming your PC has a network card, then you could simply plug it in to one of those (with the supplied cable).

Agree with MilesR on this - I`ve got the same one and have had no problems.
Depends on the modem you have to start with. Is it Ethernet or USB? If USB, you`d have to get a router that allows you to connect it that way. Never done that myself, so don`t even know if they are available (although I`m sure they are). You migth also want to look into getting a combined ADSL modem/router, but they`re more expensive.
The cheaper eBuyer own brand routers are actually ok though. I installed one for my aunt some time ago and it`s been fine. Configuring it isn`t that hard, and you can always post on here for help.
This one looks to be ok. Built in ADSL modem and print server, 108Mbps 802.11g support. Got a decent score based on 58 reviews. And yes, you will need wireless NICs for every PC you want to connect to the router, well, wirelessly.

Another vote for the Netgear here too. Can`t fault it, and really easy to setup with the excellent wizard. :)

RE: PC Wireless Advice Needed
MilesR, dvder, Chris, Uncharged_Water,
Many thanks for the advice. Just to confirm, I am looking for a combined router/modem to replace my existing BT modem (usb) - so the Netgear one via Ebuyer seems to be the way to go. Just a final question: Is there a quick way of finding out if my PC requires a PC card??
Thanks again, coolerking.
I can`t imagine it`ll have wireless out of the box. Laptops do, but generally not desktops (especially if it`s older).
One more vote for the netgear here. And as Chris says very unlikely you will have wireless unless you have installed it. BTW the netgear is available from Amazon with a free USB netgear wireless card. A couple more pounds than the Ebuyer one but saves you the cost of a wireless card.

Also if you have children using the internet the netgear has a basic content filter built in which is activated by you typing in the words to filter and if they appear on a website it gets blocked.
