Page 1 of My PC is "dead"
PCs & Mobiles Forum
The kids came running in saying the computer wouldn`t turn on. I`ve tried the mains cable and the fuse. All the cables are secured. What might be wrong?
I`ve had a couple of suggestions including:-
1. The internal fuse may have blown (didn`t know they had one)
2. The on switch may be faulty (a possible as I had a similiar problem with an old monitor)
3. Its knackered, just sling it (might consider this one if I can get into the old one to see what I want.
Anybody want to add anything (useful)

Have you tried plugging pc into a different wall socket? Maybe the socket is at fault.
But my guess would probably be the power supply in the pc.
Mike :)
First of, open the case and physically ensure everything is secure by pushing them all firmly. Video card/Sound card/Memory and the cables connecting the CDROM and H/Drive/s to the motherboard and vice versa.
After that :)
Are you getting to the POST screen.
If not are you getting any beeps when switching on.
If neither then go the cheap route and get a new battery for the motherboard.
Not sure if it can cause a system to fail but certainly a helluva lot cheaper than another PSU.
If it does not work then at the very least you know the battery is good :)

Hi
Try unpluggin any usb items then try again. I have found that to happen with the odd item on some machines . [very rare ]

Good advice Choagy, except about the battery!
Kids like to swing their legs alot and a PC case makes a nice noise so i`d double check the CPU is seated correctly by removing the heatsink/fan and checking, it`s worth taking it out and re-placing. I had a similar problem recently www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/forums/thread.asp?Forum=292&Thread=460653, it would be helpful if you could post a few more details of what you`ve got (spec/age wise) and exactly what you`ve tried to do to rectify the problem so far so we can eliminate any possibilities and make additional suggestions for you.....

The pheonix has arisen. Sat down last night and unplugged everything. They replugged everything making sure no bent pins etc.
Press the button and behold, there was life
Thanks for ideas folks.

Now you may want to back up the data.
In my experience, problems that go away by themselves, often come back by themselves.
RE: Pleased to hear it`s back.

Power supply unit had gone. £20, 4 screws and plug in the wires and its working again. If only everything in life was as simple.
