Page 1 of Hacked MSN / Passport account

:( Have had my messenger hacked by some delightful person, just how easy is it for them to do as I have a long alpha numeric password which is not related to the usual doc children etc.... ?

Has anyone else had this done recently?

I changed my password via the passport prompt site and inform MSN who did not give a crap and offered no support..

Are you sure it has been hacked? What are the symptoms? One common issue is that if your PC clock is wrongly set, MSN Messenger prevents you logging in.

Have your friends been getting abusive MSN messages?

someone tried to pass themselves off as me on an IM but they did not have my pics and they typed like a chav lol. So the person they contacted thought it was fishy.

I have since googled this and found lots of instances of passport being hacked and MS sticking thier head in the sand >:(

When you say hacked, do you mean that someone has broken your password and has logged in as you? Or have they just adopted your user name and caused a bit of havok? Or, worse case scenario, has your computer been taken over?

To be honest, the MSN thing is the least of your worries. If someone has your password and its the same password you use to log into things like Ebay, you should change your PW on everything you can think of. If your PC has been hacked, you almost certainly have a virus that has left your computer open.

Like I say, a `hacked` MSN passport can be just the tip of the Iceberg as, not being funny, but why would a random person go to all the trouble of getting into your MSN account just to spam your friends.

An often way to hack into people accounts is through that secret question rubbish, from what I remember its like your mothers maiden name or postcode. As in school many years ago we found it easy to get into peoples accounts and send love letters to other people, yes it was sad and many moons ago so no comments.

But try looking and changing that if you can.

I am 100% positive that my PC has not been hacked, I am an IT nerd working for the NHS and my background is security.

The scrot tried to contact some of my messenger contacts but as I usually use audio and my typing is normally vastly diferent to the normal chav chat, the people he was trying to contact blew him off. I noticed as he had changed my name to something unpleasent and attepted to remove all my contacts.

I never use my mothers maiden name nor are all my password the same, so I am pretty sure the forgotten password route was not the one taken. I logged into the passport site and reset all my questions and passwords just in case which logged him off.

I then did a full check of the firewall on my router and my firewall on my PC, an av scan and nothing was found. So I am pretty certain it was done out of my domain.

MS were less than helpful, I contacted them via my alternative email and gave them my IP address as I have a static IP and explained that any other IP adresses logging into my msn messenger had does so without my permission and what would they do about it. She stated that the information was private and they would do nothing about it. mmmm how to learn from your mistake msn.......

As to the random person? there are a lot of nutters out there I mean there are enough in here lol :o

Yeh I have to agree I knew someone who had their hotmail account hacked and it was via the backdoor i.e. the Secret Question rather than via the frontdoor i.e the Password.
