Page 1 of two questions about i-tunes.....

Hi All,


1. My sister`s got lots of profiles when you log onto on her PC - Her, the ehubby and the three kids each have their own - They currently have itunes which you can only access under my Nieces` profile - how can i let everybody access itunes and all them have the same tunes?

2. If they have more than 1 i-pod in the household do i need to configure itunes so that it doesnt synch everything everytime? if so - how?

1) In itunes there is an advanced option to set the music directory. Change this to a shared path (e.g. C:\Music) and copy all the files from the previous location to this new location. (This will include the itunes library - the database of songs). Do this for each profile and they`ll all get the same library, songs etc.

EDIT - for the access of itunes, it should have installed for all users....anyway, just create a shortcut to C:\Program Files\itunes\itunes.exe and use that.

2) If they don`t want to put each other`s songs on the ipods, then you can turn off auto-synching per ipod. When you attach the ipod, an icon appears in the bottom right, which will give you the ipod options, one of which will say something like "Manage my ipod manually" or something like that. This will mean that you have to move playlists/songs across manually.

What dya mean "guru"? :D I`m nothing of the sort, just a Mac fanatic...! Kind of. I wish they`d pay me more money at work though. :-( I digress, sorry!

Multiple profiles eh? There are some good suggestions here, like Miles` use of a shared path and this would work, except that if someone else logs in and starts iTunes, anything purchased/added to the library would need to be manually added to the other users library since one profile has it, but the others don`t until you manually add it (does this make sense?). This can get tedious.

The best thing to do is have one users` iTunes be the central iTunes for everyone. You can use multiple iPods with one iTunes as each iPod has its own name and that means each iPod also has it`s own preferences. Let everyone create their own custom playlists and they can synch these lists to their iPods when connected.

Connect one iPod, and set its preferences to synch the selected playlist (you can have more than one playlist per iPod). Disconnect it, then connect the next iPod, and so on. Changes to the playlists will be reflected on the iPods when these are connected. Now this one iTunes can be kept fully up-to-date and everyone will have access to all of the music.

I have three iPods with one iTunes and they all play well with one another, give it a try!
