Microsoft OEM Windows XP

Anil Khedun (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 1st July 2006, 10:50

Hi,

Having been out of the whole PC/Windows scene for a long time, I need to find out some info for a friend.

He has Windows 2000 installed on his desktop and has been using it without problem as it`s stable and works for him. Now he has to install XP for a few things and can`t wait for Vista.

My question is this: Can he buy a copy of Microsoft OEM Windows XP and install this, not as an upgrade but as a clean install, via the CD/DVD it comes on? Will he be able to activate it and use it like a regular copy of XP?

Thanks for your help!

Anil

I thought OEM versions had to come bundled with a piece of hardware (in this case a PC)?

If you buy an OEM version that has already been activated it will need activating again.

Bought the OEM version for my PC, it was gonna be a cold day in hell before I paid the full £160 for the retail version. Only difference is that it just comes in a packet like you get when buying a PC.

Technically you may have to buy a piece of hardware/accessory at the same time... a mouse will suffice :) Got mine from overclockers.co.uk

cheers for the replies. I`ll pop into a computer fair whilst out shopping so I`ll take a gander.

you`ll only have problems if you replace the motherboard say as its meant to be used to install on a pre built system once so if you try and reinstall it on what appears to be a significantly different pc then it may well refuse to reactivate but its fine on the first installation

Sysprep. ;)

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.
