Page 1 of Which laptop brand?
PCs & Mobiles Forum
My aunt wants to buy a laptop. She wants to use it for word processing, spreadsheets, internet, photographs, MP3s, copying DVDs, etc, so only basic stuff.
We have it narrowed down to a Toshiba, an HP, and a Fujitsu. They are all roughly the same in spec (all are Dual Core with 2GB RAM, so all should be futureproof for her needs), and all are £399. So it just comes down to which brand is best? The HP is the only one to come with Works, but I`ll be loading it up with Open Source software for her anyway.
The last computer she bought was a £1,000+ Time in the first half of 1998, so I don`t want her to end up with a crappy one again!

my mate works for Sony Vaio and knows this market really well - gimme a day or two and i`ll find out for you :)

Companies that have p**sed me off so much that I will never use them again and I hope you dont either....
Jacks Fish & Chips of Cambridge ridiculously overpriced and overpackaged chips. £1.20 for a stupidly small portion of chips - they need to go up north for a good lesson in fish and chips
Alloy Bodies of Manchester - The Grand Daddy & Benchmark for shockingly poor customer service.
Capital Bank Leasing who are part of [B]BOS & are f**ing useless & struggle to action the smallest request but are fantastically efficient at taking money out of my account
[B]Abbey National Absolutely diabolical service - how hard is it to change £60 of coins into notes????
....more coming soon no doubt.....
Always go for HP Compaq myself if its similar in price to competition
Just bought my daughter a Fujitsu Siemens for 299 quid for Xmas and no complaints at all. The Mrs has had a Fujitsu for work for the last 2/3 years with no problems but the HP she had before died in a serious way (HDD making horible graunching noises) and lost a HDD full of work.
So I guess you pays your money and takes your chance.

Dell
EDIT: And dont load it up with open source software. Either buy office basic or install a pikey version of it. If she uses office at work, she will grow to hate it and will ALWAYS save files in the wrong file format.
Open source alternatives are all well and good, but theres something to be said for coddling people.

HP lappys are very nice. I have had one previous to my dell and work ibm now and it was nice. If you just want to save money do have a look at Dell as they often have some good bargins.
Dell seconded.

Yeah I thought about Dell, but she`s set on buying one from a shop (she`s never bought anything online, the Time giving up the ghost in about 2000). I`ve overloaded her with options a bit - we`ve already ruled out loads of options to get to those 3 so I don`t want to overwhelm her.
I`m also still mad at Dell for the computer I used in my exam last year having unresponsive shift keys. :(

In that case get a Toshiba.

Another vote for Dell, second choice would be Lenovo if the price was right.
HP notebooks seem to be good at the moment, I know several people using them without problems.
Fujistu are a brand I have almost bought on several occasions; they used to do some very nice subnotes.
Toshiba used to be king of the hill for notebooks, but I have seen so many prematurely fail in the last few years that I would always avoid them. I returned two just before Christmas that were less than 24 months old and had both seen very little use.
