Why not get em secondhand from Blockbuster?

Lore (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 3rd June 2003, 11:37

Having looked at the problems many people seem to have with these online DVD companies, I have to wonder why anyone bothers. Frankly, most of the new titles available at discounted prices can be bought cheaper over the counter at most of the larger Blockbuster stores, sometimes considerably cheaper. The quality is usually fine and they have an excellent returns policy (used to 12 months but I think now 28 days).

No, I don`t work for them and I do appreciate that not everyone can get to one easily but unless you are looking for something off catalogue they are a good bet ( and sometimes even then) . VHS, of course, even cheaper these days!

The nature of `Retailer Reviews` is that people only tend to post when they`ve had a problem with a specific company, so it distorts the picture somewhat. You don`t see many posts along the lines of `ordered a DVD from Play, they sent it, it arrived, no problem`. ;-)

I`ve bought dozens of DVDs from online companies over the years, and never had a major problem with any of them. I suspect I`m not in the minority, either.

I`ve no objection to buying secondhand DVDs (provided the price is right), but I tend to avoid ex-rental stuff because it`s often in appalling condition by the time it gets punted on.

Mike

I`ve only ever got one `bargain` DVD from Blockies and that was a copy of "New Year`s Day" I got about a year ago. In my local branch ex-rental DVDs are usually more expensive to buy than they are online or on the high street, I refuse to pay £17.99 for a used copy when I could get it new for under £15!

I agree with Mike, ex-rentals are usually in appauling condition. This is no fault of Blockbuster though, but the assholes who don`t know how to handle a DVD properly. The last time I rented something out, it was a new release (had been out a week). I had to clean the DVD because there were so many finger prints and scratches. Blockbuster got it back in better condition than when it went out. But if that is after only a week, imagine what the DVD`s will be like after two months!

Personally, I like getting them new.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, no matter how wrong it is ;-)

I wouldn`t buy anything from BLockbuster cos they charge through their noses for new releases, i.e. Die Another Day is £50, whihc is £48 too much.

Blockbuster`s rental DVDs are cleaned with brillo pads and never work :-(

Movietrak are quite good for ex-rental discs, I believe, tho` never tried them myself.
