Are you buying just for the sake of buying?

nesbitt (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 1st April 2001, 01:53

Are people buying DVDs just for the sake of adding to their collection, have a look at your DVDs and see which ones you have watched more than once,I dont have a lot of time anyway to keep rewatching movies now anyway so Im just gonna buy ones which I would,Someone(I cant remember who) said they had bought a DVD for about a fiver and somebody replied the film in question was crap to which the purchaser said "so what its a DVD and any DVD is worth it for a fiver"..that in my opinion is a waste of five pound if the film is total dogturd and not worth bothering with.Ive been guilty of it myself I bought Bedazzled and Man on the moon for £13-15 I will not watch them again so I may as well saved my cash and just rented them for about £3 and still had the experience of watching them just once.Oh and this quote is from `TOP 100 DVDS-DVD Review magazine(a crap mag that rates everything highly as long as it has a great picture)--..`Con Air demands to be a part of your collection whether you like it or not`?-- all this because the picture transfer is first class,so if you hate the film buy it anyway because the transfer is amazing*BOLLOCKS*..By the way Fight Club is worth buying and Final destination these are rewatchable.

I do agree with ya general point nesbitt. Alot of films don`t stand up to repeated viewings (even some really good films), and as for buying a disc because the transfer `n` extras are amazing, what does that matter if the film in question is crap? As the saying goes, you can`t polish a turd! (eg Snatch) .

I`m as guilty as the next one of this, especially the `buying a DVD because it`s cheap`.

I think partly that`s down to me steadfastedly refusing to pay full price for a DVD (not done yet), so whenever a bargain proffers itself, I just go for it, and don`t think about the long term at all.

However, if I`m buying dross, it does mean I can offload it, maybe even at a minor profit too. For example, if `Boiler Room` (which I paid a fiver for) turns out to be total garbage, I can always flog it in Gamestation or EB - I should get my money back, give or take 50p.

I bought `Sleepy Hollow` (£10 - not watched it yet) and `Blair Witch Project` (£7) even though I`d not seen them before BECAUSE they were cheap ! OK, I was pleasantly surprised by BWP (no, scratch `pleasantly surprised` and replace with `pooping my panties`), so that gamble paid off. But will it be as scary second time around ? Dunno...

However, out of my stack of discs there are ones I`ll watch over and over - `Heat` because it`s my fave movie ever, `Ronin` for the car chases, etc, etc.

I don`t think I`m as fussy as I was when buying prerecorded VHS, but it`s only because I can`t wait to hear my Yamaha A5 do the biz with these discs.

HMMM I`m guilty too! but I`ve starting renting now from `movietrak.com` which I can recommend - renting by post for £3.50 suits me! (sir!)

yes!!! :D Although I do make sure I buy films that I will watch again (out of my collection I have only 3 which you couldn`t make me watch again, but altogether they cost a fiver a piecewhich I`ll off load to someone sooner or later ). I don`t want to rent as I`d rather spend hat money on a decent disc (Hong Kong discs don`t cost too much more than a rental and you get to keep them. And they are always worth watching again IMO).

I try to only buy action movies that I`m going to watch again and again .... eg. Matrix, Gladiator, Max 2 etc... Ronin car chase is great after the pub!

Stay away from chick flicks and you can`t go far wrong.
Mind you I have bought about 5 DVDs which I had the VHS for already........booo !

i buy dvds cos they either sound good or the cover looks good. I bought boiler room and micey blue for a fiver a piece. It would have cost around £6 to rent anyway. This way i can lend to all my mates for free and who knows if the movies good, youve ended up with a bargain. I also buy dvds on recomendations e.g T2:UE was recomended highly by everyone. Also ferrris buellers day off and mallrats and x-men and prince of egypt were highly recomended. Any Given Sunday i thought the cover looked good and bought it. what a great movie that turned out to be and a bargain for £13. The Road To Eldorado i just read the storyline and thought hmm interesting and bought it and its great fun. These are all movies that i watch again and again.

Another thread this reminds me of is the one about being addicted to buying DVDs. At the time, I thought I was (and I think a lot of other posters thought I was as well). Now, I`m not too sure. I only buy movies I really really like the sound of, or that I`ve enjoyed in the past and enjoy watching again. Looking at my collection, I reckon there`s only a couple of pictures I bought and now think "why the hell did I buy that". There are a few movies that weren`t as high on my list of priorities, but they were usually bought as part of a threefer, twofer or BOGOHP deal.

Now I reckon those deals are dangerous, and one does find oneself buying a movie just for the sake of it to make up the numbers. It always seems to be the way that you see one film you really want and you can get it say for a tenner as part of a threefer deal. There`s maybe a second movie that you`ve thought about but decided not to buy so far. Then you look for your third disk, and find yourself buying a movie you`d never even consider buying even if you were sober and you were looking for something your gran could watch. Personally I think they do it on purpose. Somehow.
