DDD House questions...

bigfan (Elite) posted this on Friday, 25th January 2002, 20:19

Just a few queries...

How does the picture quality of these R3 discs compare with their equivalent R1 and R2 versions?

Are they all legit from DDD?

And is Shaolin Soccer worth getting, I`ve never really taken an interest in Hong Kong films but there have been some good reviews for this one.

the picture quality is decent but not superb like region 1/2`s.
I finally got my shaolin soccer after 8 days. It wasnt all that to tell you the truth. It was over the top unbelievable stuff. The special effects however were a delight to watch. Apart from that, it didnt do anything for me. I didnt find it very funny at all apart from the egg/fat dude gag. Maybe my expectations were too high but after all the hype, i was dissapointed with the film. I was good to watch but i dont know if i will watch it over and over again. Maybe once in a while. The effects were great but it was way too cartoonish.

I`m still waiting on my first order to arrive from DDD so I`ll let you know what they`re like. I too have ordered Shoalin Soccer (amongst other dvd`s).

I can relate to what Dicanio says though about having high expectations about a film that`s so hyped up, when you actually get around to seeing it it`s sometimes a bit of an anti-climax.

I wondered about some of the dvd`s being legit too, people say that if dvd`s are cheap and are all region then they are most likely to be pirated copies.

I`ve also heard about Mr Vampire, apparently that is pretty funny too....anyone seen it?

I have ordered a number of DVDs from DDDHouse and they usually reach me in about a week.

The picture quality of the DVD depends on the film i.e. Shaolin Soccer, Legend Of Zu both have good picture quality but there are quite a few which don`t. Also, sometimes the English subtitles can leave a lot to be desired, but most of the time they are very good and understandable.

DDDHouse merchandise is very much legit.

Shaolin Soccer is very funny and OTT fun. At the price you are getting it from DDDHouse there is nothing to complain about and it has some cracking special features to boot (all with subtitles or English translation). Top Stuff!

If you have the choice between Universal or Taiwan Megat star then go for the latter as i have a number of those (some are sold by tai seng in the US) and they`re fine but my Universal copy of City On Fire has some dimpling on the surface that is ignored by my dvd rom drive but gave my tescos cheapo Minato player some trouble resulting in me buying a chipped pioneer DVD which seems to handle it. Cheap chinese DVDs and cheap chinese DVD players can be iffy but at the price its not much of a gamble.
Mr Vampire is excellent btw

Mr Vampire is one of the best Hong Kong movies I`ve seen, It`s the movie that got me interested in HK movies way back in 1989.

Also check out Mr Vampire 3, the second one was a bit disapointing.
