Middlesbrough sack Southgate

pat-w (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 21st October 2009, 01:51

Middlesbrough have sacked Gareth Southgate.
If this had happened when they were relegated on one would have been very surprised, but after a 2-0 win, with the club 4th in the table, & only one point behind the top of the table West Brom, this all seems very odd timing. :/
More details here

Just read the following at The Times website Quote:
overall, Middlesbrough won 45, lost 63 and drew 43 of his 151 matches as manager.

also
Steve Gibson, the chairman, Quote:
is known to be concerned over falling attendances, which have affected the club's cashflow, and last night's attendance of 17,459 was the lowest ever for a league game at the Riverside, leaving the the ground half-empty.

a 2-0 victory last night and 4th in the table

I didnt put 2 and 2 together this morning but this was mentioned on the radio

There is no way this was anything other than known before last nights game to the board and Southgate
It has to have been "a done deal" before that
Southgate has always seen like a good bloke to me and I imagine he would have been happy to ensure the team had a manager for the game and to go out with a home win

Strange decision at this time though. I mean if falling attendances is an issue then promotion can only help
Disrupting the team in its current league position may not be the way to get that promotion!!!
Attendances starting falling at Boro a few years ago. Money became tighter and Premier League ticket prices went up
The fact they were crap last yr and got relegated no doubt only served to exacerbate this trend

Its unusual for Gibson to go down this route so they must have good reason. However, if they cock it up and dont get promoted then I think Boro could have some torrid years ahead

Don`t they always link our manager with a vacant post.. I`m sure there was "manager shortlist" notepaper with Martin O`Neill printed at the top....

NP is bound to be linked... but then again Strachan appears to be front runner.. along with the other usual suspects... Souness... O`Leary... etc...

Mind you if we get Davids.. maybe NP won`t want to leave...... :D

You think he`d leave a dutch side playing in the champions league to come back to division 2 (effectively / in old money) Boro??

I dont

Mclaren is doing well out in FC Twente now aswell and enhancing his reputation, as originally the Dutch weren`t impressed, but as the season went on last year they were impressed with his form and tactics etc.

They`re actually top of the Eredivision at the moment aswell I think.

Seems a step down for Strachan, as he`ll be one of the first choices for most Premiership jobs that come up this season (probably even be a dark horse on Liverpool job).

Odds aren`t on Betfair, but wouldn`t bet against Darren Ferguson.

If he was to get the Liverpool job I think i`d be going out and buyng an Arsenal shirt and swapping allegances

And step down??? most of the clubs in the EPL he has managed get relegated so surely it is more his level :-D

I was (half) joking about McLaren.
I also think Strachan would be extremely lucky to be linked with any premiership job at all, never mind a top team.
