Page 1 of wrong ariel?
Television Forum
hi guys,
my freeview picture is very poor ie blocking sometimes, i have a signal tester and when plugged in only manages around 50db its a decent aeriel maxiview but i cant understand why i have such a poor signal, also when its windy the picture blocks quite a bit.
Advice please guys
its not your ariel its the recption area, freeview is badly affected by atmospherics, especially high winds and heavy rain! Our Tv`s upsatirs have similar issues in that they get the interference when you walk in front of the ariel?
Hasn`t the digital switchover meant that your signal strength should have gone up a huge amount?

I got this system http://www.screwfix.com/p/philex-c10w-s-32-element-digital-aerial-with-distribution-kit/37921 from Screwfix a few months ago and get 100-98 on both strength/quality so worth a punt. Amplifier gives us the 100-98 in all three rooms fed from the aerial.

I read somewhere that if i have an aerial for weak reception areas in a strong reception area that can also cause problems
iam sure my aerial is too strong for the area if that makes any sense?

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..
Whilst I think an amplifier can boost a strong signal too much, I don`t believe a very sensitive ariel designed for a weak signal area is anything more than a better ariel. It makes no sense that using a good ariel could cause you issues. :/

It`s a thing from the analogue days.
If you had the wrong type of aerial (identified by a colour coded square on the front end of the main centre arm) you got a bad reception regardless how good it was.
There were also situations where someone could have an absolutely fantastic, top of the range aerial but it would then pick up from more than one transmitter (I used to get Darvel and Blackhill interference occasionally) and if they had anything transmitting on nearby frequencies you would get issues.
Didn`t happen very often though and usually cured with the correct type for the required transmitter, think in the end up I had a wideband one thart covered more than one and meant I didn`t have to change it after the digital signals started.
BTW Asda do similar kits to the one posted at around £20 without the booster setup but at £30 from that link it`s not a bad deal.
[edit] Just reread the original post, blocking occasionally and worse when windy? Have you checked the deflector plate (the upright bit at the back) is solid and not moving around? Also check the co-ax all the way to the aerial itself as you may have a break internally or an outer that`s chafed causing signal drop out.
Last check on that is whether the pole or mount the aerial is on is secure and not got lots of movement, if it`s swinging about in the wind it`ll lose signal and blocking will occur ;)
HTH a bit. [endedit]

When I first saw this thread I thought "Well, what kind of signal does he expect to get from a Little Mermaid on the roof". We`re in a strong double-signal area - we get a strong signal from Winter Hill and a secondary signal from North Wales during high pressure weather that can override the Winter Hill signal. It doesn`t stop ITV2 being an absolutely ghastly pixellated mess on fast-moving action.
When they started pushing digital, they talked about perfect pictures - no more snow. What an absolute con. So many channels are so pixellated they look like they`re being censored to protect somebody`s identity, or the picture quality (take a bow QVC) just plain grotty.
