As a first episode I'll buy it.
Doctor - A+
Ryan - A
Yasmin - B+
Graham --- must've wandered into the wrong classroom.

I'll stay on for the ride but I'm hiding from the ticket collector till I know where we're going.

It's gone down well with the fans, but as per every previous doctor, it'll take a few episodes before I give it a yay or nay.

Okay I've slept on it now.

NO ACTUAL SPOILERS but you might want to watch it before reading.
Just re read my post. Definitely watch it first

The best part about the whole thing is Jodie Whittaker. I have no problem with a female Doctor at all and she nailed it pretty well from the off.
It started of fine and the ball of electrical worms was a good Who type villain but then it went downhill.

Casting seemed to have been done by the HR dept filling a quota.

They went rummaging round the DVD collection to fill out the rest of the script MacGyver, Escape from New York, A Team and rounded it off with a pound shop Predator for the actual villain.

HR dept seemed to co-opted their mate in to stand behind the scriptwriter the loud clang as the 'only idiots carry knives' hit the floor was deafening.
It's apparently okay to climb a metal tower crane and mess about with live jump leads as it's only the fall that will kill you. If you're going to preach, which I wish you weren't, then be consistent.

If the diversity is supposed to help us identify with the characters then it's failed. I'm an old white guy and Bradley Walsh, much as I like him, seems completely wrong.

All of this is written with some affection cos I really want to like it.

Why was I getting Highlander 2 flashbacks?

Oh, that's why...

I liked it overall, but only in so far as it introduces the Doctor and the new companions, the story was secondary and a bit overly pants to be honest.

There were definitely a few mis-hits there, but did you expect anything different in modern television?

Only in the context of the opening story.  I like Walsh and a fan of his acting from L&O:UK, so I know he has acting chops.  His presence makes a little more sense now as I suspect his story SPOILER:
is about his growing relationship with his now dead wife's (who didn't see that come coming?) son with dyspraxia.

Whittaker was great, but I'm hoping that she brings in some gravitas at some point as not sure this will work with an almost jolly hockey sticks approach forever, although I hope she doesn't go too OTT like Tennant did.  I like her humour, I didn't once question her presence in the lead role.

She's great.  Let's hope the writing doesn't let her down in the same way it did for Capaldi sometimes...

Yes, I felt for the first season they really didn't know how to write for Capaldi, then started to get the hang of it. Feels a lot more like they have a more rounded feel of how Whittaker would portray the character.

Tom Baker's Doctor had a regularly mentioned dislike for guns, this isn't a new thing. I'm not saying the makers of the show aren't being very aware that kids watch this show and using it to occasionally preach to it's audience, I'm sure they do, it's just not a new thing.

Talking of Baker... waiting for the theme tune and having to wait until the end, with no intro sequence, when I finally heard it I thought this was the closest to the Baker era musically, which I liked.

Not sold on the companions yet, probably sharing too much screen time and not being very developed yet. I also really liked Pearl Mackie and Matt Lucas.

I hope they have David Bradley back as the first doctor at some point, that could be the most entertaining Two Doctors for a while!

Actually I've just remembered something that was a little jarring on that score, SPOILER:
where the Doctor admonishes Tim(?) for pushing Predator-lite off the crane after she has just started to melt his face by transference of all the DNA bombs into him...

And actually, reflecting on it, if the knife thing was an attempt to try to influence those in London affected by knives, then I can forgive it a whole lot more...
