Synopsis:
Anand (Satyan Kapoor), is a union party leader, and is blackmailed by his bosses to accept low pay terms for all the workers otherwise his family will be killed. Under duress he agrees to all the demands made by the company`s ruthless bosses and sells out. When the employees learn that Anand sold them out he is beaten and his family condemned. While walking home from school one day the workers grab Anands son, Vijay, and forces him to have a tattoo on his arm, which reads `my father is a thief`.

Anand, a once respected person in the community, becomes totally depressed and ends up spending the rest of his life in a train compartment away from his family.

The rest of the family, wanting to get away from this, move to Bombay after putting up with much humiliation. Vijay decides to help his mother by working so that his brother Ravi can go to school. Because of what has happened to him Vijay loses faith in God, and his religious mother is sad about this.

Over the years Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan), becomes harder and bitter, carrying the harshness of life from his childhood, the streets of Bombay and the shipping port where he now works as a `coolie`. Fed up with the gang members that extort wages from the other coolies, Vijay decides that some changes need to be made, and beats up the gang who work for Savant Seth (Madan Puri). This results in him getting a job in the underworld, which offers him a life of luxury and wealth away from the slums he has been used to.

Ravi (Shashi Kapoor), who`s been shelled away in his studies, cannot find work in the private sector. But his soon to be father in law, who is a police commissioner, gives Ravi the idea of becoming a police officer. Ravi decides to go for police training away from home and works hard to achieve his new goal. While this is happening, his brother Vijay becomes a big don in the underworld taking over from his old boss and becoming a more permanent problem for Savant Seth.

Vijay buys luxury goods and makes his mother and Ravi come to live with him in his new home, but both are unaware of Vijay`s real job, assuming that he is just a businessman. However Ravi soon finds out the truth when he joins the police force and this creates a rift between the two brothers. Ravi, bound by duty, warns his brother to give up his activities, as it will all come to a bad end. But Vijay who carries the scars of poverty will not quit. Whether the rift can be overcome is the question that this film tries to answer...
