Synopsis:
Both Raj Gupta (Sanjeev Kumar) and Shanti (Waheeda Rahman) are in love with each other. Raj, an engineer, impresses his boss with the hard work he contributes to the company. Raj, who wants to marry Shanti, asks his mother for her permission but he`s shocked when he learns that his boss has asked permission from Raj`s mother for Raj to marry his daughter Kamini. Raj`s mother persuades her son to marry Kamini who has wealth and status and is important for a person to survive and to live a comfortable life. Shanti can`t provide this status.

Raj decides to marry Kamini and leaves Shanti, but Shanti meets Raj for the last time conveying to him that she is pregnant with his child. Shanti leaves town and resides in a village under extreme poverty with health problems and despite this she raises her child, Vijay, with care and love under hardship.

Years pass by and Shanti is dying. Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan), who works in the local quarry, rushes to see his dying mother. Shanti makes Vijay promise that he will be a good and strong person in this cruel world. Shanti then dies and Vijay is now free to begin his revenge on his father and makes his way to the city.

Vijay learns that his father is involved in trying to evict thugs off his land through court proceedings but is getting nowhere. This is where Vijay steps in to offer help to his father and says that though he has no money, he`ll promise to get rid of the thugs and buy the land from him. Raj, impressed with Vijay, decides to let him have the land provided that he could do the things he says, if not then he will sue Vijay. Vijay keeps his real identity from his father and through violence gets rid of the thugs. He then gets a loan from Balwant (Prem Chopra) who is a business rival of Raj and pays his father for the land.

From then on he begins his new engineering company called Shanti Constuctions, named after his mother, and his company expands, creating problems for Raj`s company. He manages to hire Raj`s personal secretary Geeta (Rahkee), who has knowledge about the engineering industry, and both form a working partnership to create buildings that will have his mother`s name on them. Price is of no concern for Vijay as his aim is not to make money but to make Raj suffer just as his own mother did.


Vijay also wants to strike in Raj`s personal life. Raj has two children Shekar (Shashi Kapoor), and Bubbly (Poonam Dhillon). Bubbly is in love with Sunny (Sachin), who works in her fathers company. In the meantime Shekar is dating Sheetal (Hema Malini). Vijay tries to break Shekar`s love by trying to date Sheetal himself but is unsuccessful. However when he learns that Raj is unhappy with his daughter dating Sunny he finds the right moment and stands by Bubbly. This creates havoc in the once happy family life of Raj.

Fed up with the problems that Vijay is causing him he hires a hitman to kill him off. What happens next forms the climax of the movie...
