Review of Barwarchi

Introduction

An above average plot that still inspires many blockbuster films like `Hero No 1` (1997), `Dulhan Hum Le Jaynege` (2000) and `Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge` (1995). The film has fine characters due to the wonderful performances given by the cast, while the screenplay and dialogue is very clever with its perfect timing in comedy. Another fine comedy from director Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

Video

The film is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.33:1 (fullscreen 4:3). The print shows minor signs of wear and tear in the form of small dust particles appearing on the print, but for a film that is 30 years old it sure is in good condition. Besides, the wear and tear doesn`t interrupt viewing, as they aren`t that apparent.

The picture shows no signs of any artefacts, but as the film is old some grain is detected in a minor capacity. The overall images are quite sharp and clear detailing neat picture information. Shimmering is nearly non-existent and moiré effects are kept at minimum levels. Colour fidelity is fine for a film this age.

Audio

The sound is presented in its original format, mono, doing a good job in giving clear and precise information accompanying the film. The sound does have a couple of quick drop outs and hissing, which is due to the dying film stock used. However it doesn`t interfere with the overall audio presentation.

Features

Menus are well animated and are easy to navigate. There are no extras on this DVD as the film has a running time of over two hours with a high average bit rate transfer reaching a high of 7Mbit/sec over half the time. This is a plus point as the much needed space goes to the quality presentation of the film.

Conclusion

Hrishikesh Mukherjee offers clever wit and fine comedy direction which I`m sure viewers will admire. The DVD quality of Barwarchi is the best seen of this release ever, and will certainly add to your viewing of this film. Worth the purchase.
