RE: Avoiding Spam

There is much good advice here about a strategy to avoid spam:

Set up a first line mail account with say hotmail.Do not use common terms or names such as blue, smith, two or brown. If entering competitions etc always use junk addressess.

Switch on spam filters.

Before downloading mail use a spam agent that lets you see your waiting server messages. These can in many cases be refused at the server and bounced back to the sender signalling a invalid address.

Turning to your machine make sure it is aways up to date to stop hackers, always have a firer wall, always remove spyware after every session. If you get a flood of junk e-mails check for spyware.Use an appropriate browser.

RE: Firefox Problem

Had this problem with heavy use of FF too however outlook seems to also behave that way occasionally.Assumed it was a window OS problem ?

RE: Money for old phones

There are several phone recycling companies the oldest of which is Cellular Reclamation Ltd who collect phones for charitable causes and donate the funds to your charity. Also Office Green... never heard of environfone.Whatch out for cowboys the carphone warehouse also does an exchange scheme under the new WEEE directive.

RE: Ubuntu

Yes this is a good point..these sysstems are in evolution and is constantly undated. The newest release is 6.06 1st june 2006.confusion may occur by mistaking older versions for the current one.But there again you could buy windows and have the problems asscociated with that plan...http://www.ubuntu.com/ 8)

RE: Help - Why can`t I receive any emails?

RE: New PC time...advice/recommendations

I agree this is an OK spec.If you are looking for a leading edge PC there are a lot of small specialists building for the gamers market. My personal choice is dual core 64 bit vista compatable. The mother board seems to be the most important item hear to me aim for very high end architecture and bus speeds. If you are aiming for power keep an eye on case cooling.

RE: Talk Talk Broadband Package.

I am very sceptical with BT involved with this.Hats off to Charles for trying where others have been failed by BT.I enquired switching from NTL who`s prices are now not competative to this service.Like so many headline prices the price talk talk quote is unreasonable with all the stealth charges; the annualised charges quoted to me over 18 months works out at £28.99 per month with BT involved. This is not cheap,it`s even as expensive as poor quality service provider NTL could match.

I am contemplating the next generation technology before locking myself into an 18 month contract anyone signed up for now.com.Least the price you see is what you get!!! Like the tt not all the country is covered and there is an installation wait in some areas. But least you do NOT need a landline and the modem is free with the contract for 12 months!

Anyone signed up yet?

RE: can I use the same copy of XP on my laptop as on my desktop???

I came across this on e-bay does this have a bearing on this discussion?

View or Change your Windows NT/2000/XP Product Key

The Windows Key Viewer is a 52 KB file that you run (it does not install any software; it is self-contained) on the PC for which you need the Product Key. The Product Key along with other vital system information is displayed immediately.

There are many reasons why you might need to use the Windows Key Viewer:

1. Forgot or lost your Product Key.
2. Need to re-install operating system.
3. Moving operating system to a new computer.
4. Inadvertently entered a pirated Product Key and you need to change the Product Key to a legitimate key (Only necessary in Windows XP).
5. Just curious!

RE: FREE registry cleaners

A common complaint about all the cleaners I had experience with. Two things that you should look for are: A backup/restore funtion, you must accept some risk in this operation.

RE: can I use the same copy of XP on my laptop my desktop???

Thought of trying some alternatives for free??

RE: can I use the same copy of XP on my laptop my desktop???

I think you have almost got there. The reason I would not buy a PC with pre loaded XP is that harddisks do fail regularly.Mine may last from six months to three years.

What the unwitting buyer of these machines do NOT comprehend is this.If your hard disk fails after 12 months neither harddisk manufacturer or the MS support will be interested as this area of configeration is up to the retailer (three people involved so far).If a dispute arises say MS refuse you a new key. You have paid for an OS which potentially will last only 12 months (very poor purchase).

ALWAYS ALWAYS buy PC`s with a separate manufacturers xp disk included (this is not a branded recovery disk) as your disk will fail sooner or later.Darwin was right the stupid will be conned by the industry regulary.MS press releases give you three stikes, hackers seem to think all is needed is a felt pen..

XP is a very information leaky OS and gives out personal machine data from all who seek it... load XPantispy it helps. Many business won`t use XP as they cannot comply with data protection requirements.

Is the new vista OS going to fail in the small business sector too by pumping your personal details to everyone who is interested??

Thoughts?

solaris for PC`s-is this the ansawer or just bogged down with tech feeding frenzy for the home user

Has anyone tried the new solaris OS distributions.I am thinking of running the jarva desktop on my next pc build in tandem with 2000.The problem with a lot of these sites is that they are so technical it is difficult to tease out the basics.

Is it free yes
What programmes will it be compatible with
Will it run crossover emulators (such as wine) for MS based programmes?
What hardware do I need
Can I run it along side of windows
Can I run it instead of MS on a suitable pc
Does it crash like MS regularly..no
It it more secure to viruses than MS...yes very stable
Is it good for gamers
Will it run faster and require less spec than MS xp
Will old PC`s like it better?
How much support is there especially for security?

I would like to use Jarva desktop but there are a number of linux/solaris distributions up and running will these simply put be a good substitute for MS on my PC? after all they are free !!!

I would like to buy a GB motherboard and use 64 or 64x AMD or 86x architecture will this bee OK ?

Copying MP3 files from my desk top music playlist to an MP3

Those who have tried to solve the problem of restricted transfers of their music favourites to portable devices from ITunes to non ipods may be interested to visit the Bang and Olufsen site to download their new Beoplayer 4.01. I am currently evaluating this software on my PC and wonder if anyone has tried it?

RE: FREE registry cleaners

I use the last free version of JV16 which is well thought of.

BenQFP783 Screen on the blink?Shutting down

I have a 9 month old Benq783 TFT monitor.I had a recent trojan attack from spyqq.a.I reformatted the disk and removed all traces from my machine. However the monitor during the attach would shut down every 14 mins.Shut down means goes dark, the power light would remain green. Before going to shut down the screen would go light and dark instantly. The PC was unaffected in anyway. To recover the screen switch off power for five minites and them switch on with no problem. All machine setting are reset and drivers reinstalled. No hardware clashes seem to be present. It now (post this work) shuts down from 40mins to 70 mins..strange but frustrating.Though initially it maybe a heating problem but now mistifyed.

Any ideas or is this a garantee job?

RE: Another dead PC thread.....

Surely a hardware fault will be picked up by a functioning bios chip with a series of beeps indicating the origin of the hardware fault?Make sure the CPU is seated correctly with new seating compound it does tend to dry out over time.

RE: Connecting DVD Player to TFT monitor

HI

Only a few players will have a VGA output and some will play via a VGA scart cable such as many of the kiss range.I would suggest you think outside the box with this one and consider a Karoake machine (DVD player with additional facilities) like The Bluelaser-DVG 888 or similar which will play DVD via CTR or many TFT.Sound will be via 5.1 or RL through your stereo.

RE: bluelaser - 888 review

Well from the information I have received so far is that this machine is a reboxed Samsung machine put together by Samsung supplier DTS http://www.dtsinfo.co.kr.Sold in Europe as Bluelaser and in the states the equivilent would be CAVS DVD-203G BLK http://www.cavsusa.com or http://www.scdg.com/dvd-203gblk.html
;)

RE: bluelaser - 888 review

No just personnally interested in my purchase

bluelaser - 888 review

I was looking for a high spec DVD player which would run a computer screen or projector via a DVD.Thinking outside the box I read a lot of interesting reviews on a karoke machine or home entertainment DVD called a BLUELASER-888.The new model is apparently taking the DVD home entertainment market by storm.Eventually I bought one and feel pritty happy with my purchase so far.But I have some questions? Who makes them? Who services them? manufactures site? I am told they are a high quality Japaneese manufacturer reboxing Pioneer equipment which is very reliable and is boxed to withstand knocks.

Has anyone reviewed this product? ;)
