Battle of the Planets 12 disc boxset

bargainhunt (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 31st August 2004, 18:42

I managed to pick this up for £35 in my local WH Smith. Some of the other boxsets seem to have been reduced of late (Battlestar Galactica but still not that cheap). Still looking for Gatchaman on the cheap ...

I`ll checl my WHS, but since they have never had ANY of the other offers posted here i doubt they will have this either... sigh.

They also made another edited version of Gatchaman called "G Force" in the 1980s. It was better than Battle of the Planets in that there is less stuff edited out and there is no 7-Zark-7. (Hey, I liked 7-Zark-7 but after a while he can get a bit annoying, especially when you have watched Gatchaman / G Force / Eagle Riders without him.)

You can buy volume 1 of G Force which has the first 3 episodes for GBP 2.99 delivered from sendit.com (formerly known as blackstar.co.uk):

By the way, I would also thoroughly recommend the 1993 re-make. You can get all three episodes of the OAV re-make, both subbed and dubbed Japanese / English in one package, on DVD for GBP 12.22 delivered from dvdpacific.com.

Got the OVA series from the 90s - this attracted me to Gatchaman. A lot more cartoon violence. Good storyline. Got the ultimate boxset as well with free figure.
I see DVD Pacific have the anniversary set soon - hopefully has the Unglish version of Gatchaman

Apart from the name changes in various versions - the leader is also called Ken or David, the subtitles make the Allo Allo producers look like experts - a lot more funnier than Casey Kasem.

Well I might buy it for £35 but not the RRP of £89.99

It appears to be in the Box Sets sale at my local Whsmiths :D

as expected, my WHS has no box set sale that i can see. It did seem to have one box set of babylon 5 for £22.99 which i guess might be considered sale prices. :-(

I`m after the whole gatchaman series (not g-force or OVA) which seems to be widely available in hong kong and on ebay as 3 box sets (eps 1-45,46-90,91-120 or something) but with horrible amounts of postage (same with the studio ghibli box set). I`m surprised none of the online dvd retailers from that region seem to carry either of them... :-(

The main dealers in Region 1 etc do not sell these versions as they are deemed bootlegs. If you do a search on Gatchaman you find an interesting history on the programme, products to buy etc (including BOTP lego).

However, as the owner of 2 and 3, they are impressive. There are the noticeable dark patches in the filming but it is amazing how they do the translation, graphics and extras.
The sets are variously priced at $40 approx and some can be posted for $10 (if you shop around).

Rhino as supposedly preparing for a new release, so much better than buying them 2 episodes at a time. But if you get the ultimate boxset you see BOTP and Gatchaman at the same time - and there is such a difference in storyline (children can`t see anyone die so the last part, episode 105, will be interesting.

Gatchaman 2 has not, apparently, been translated. Same 5 members (sort of) and a new enemy.

Now if only they called it Science Ninja Team, Gatchaman it would have been far more successful (interestingly the Mutant Turtles have gone Ninja (not Hero) so there is always a hope.

Enough of the history, I picked up NYPD Blue season 1 in WHS for a tenner the other day as well. Not much you can add to that really.
