Closed Amazon thread

Reestit Mutton (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 30th October 2004, 02:10

For the record, I`d like to apologise unreservedly to everyone for a slip in my usual high standards - firstly because the deal was, to say the least, not very ethical and secondly because I neglected to include non-affiliate links in my post (which I usually do), preferring simply to point you at my website for fuller details in this instance.

For my sins, I intend to donate £35 (the cost of one of the DVD players in question) to St. Christopher`s Hospice (a charity that cares for the terminally ill and their families) - rest assured this is likely to be far more than I could have earned by selling DVDs for next to nothing via affiliate links. Afterall, Amazon commission on zero cost prior to delivery is...erm...zero.

I can either send the payment myself or, if the moderators prefer, send them a cheque made out to St. Christophers Hospice for them to pass on and acknowledge here.

As an aside...I would suggest that anyone who actually took advantage of the information provided and was able to get a bargain as a result also considers a small donation to charity - however, I believe that this should be a purely private matter for each individual concerned and need not be publicly discussed here.

I hope you can all forgive me...
Reestit Mutton

I for one think that is more than honourable, and let me just say that Reestit has always posted very good bargains on this site and others and I personally have saved a fortune by following his suggestions, ie : the Woollies mobile phone saga, so the only thing I can say is "good on on you Reestit keep up the good work" :)

Nice one RM, very honourable. I didn`t go for any of these as I drew the line. Not to say I don`t think Amazon were absolutely stupid to let this occur in the first place, or that the lure and excitement of the "bargains" to be had at the time wasn`t great.

As others have said you always come up with the good deals, and repost those that haven`t made the wider audience. Way back before your site existed I got a mobile or two courtesy of your postings (around the time that B`ham charity raised a few grand through CPW kickbacks over on MSE).

Ah yes...I remember that one - IIRC, it was a Nokia 3510i on Your Plan 120 with £225 cashback. Offer ended 24 December 2003.

Mine is now on OVP TMobile Everyone Offpeak 500 to augment my daytime XNET minutes.

Thanks for the kind words everyone - it`s more than generous of you.

`Not very Ethical`?

Hmm... If it was a small trader struggling to stay afloat then perhaps I`d have some moral qualms about it, but certainly not in the case of Amazon, who are a huge international company, who certainly won`t feel the impact of losing £30 a few times over.

But having said that, nice action on the charity donation.
