Superbit is it worth it?

BizArrE (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 21st February 2003, 13:25

So then superbit is it worth replacing older dvds with this format?
Got a nice set up just want to know if it time to trade in those old copies against superbit version?

The short answer is - yes. Plug here for my reviews of the superbit `Godzilla` and `Crouching Tiger`
Superbit will not make a bad film any better, but if you have good kit, and a good sound system the picture and sound are wonderful.

As for the price! - Play have the best i`ve seen.

Me I`m waiting for the R2 release of `Dark Crystal` and `Labyrinth`

From what i`ve heard the general consensus is no. I haven`t seen one so i`m just going on that. To replace older purchases with a superbit sounds ridiculous though, I think you`d have to be the king of enthusiasts to do that.

I`ve also heard that we get the emporer`s new clothes syndrome with these discs. Advertising victim goes out and buys his/hers superbit DVD, they go home and watch it and they aren`t totally sure if it`s better. However, they`ve spent the money, so they kid themselves into thinking it`s great!

A cynic would say that it`s just another way of making more money with endless releases.

So you`ve got a decent setup.... I think it depends on what older DVD you`re going to replace?

If the DVD`s are not 5.1 and the picture(s) are scabby, then do it by all means.

I watched the standard Air Force 1 which my dad lent me, it had 5.1 sound, and a decent picture. Months later I bought the superbit, to be honest I couldn`t tell the difference. Maybe if I compared them side by side, or watching straight away I don`t know. Maybe I`m just deaf and blind?! But if I`d have known I`d have bought the standard version for half price!

I wouldn`t rule superbit out, I`d just compare it to which version you`re going to replace first!

Newer films will test your system just fine, the older films probably would benefit superbit.

The guy above is buying Labyrinth and Dark Crystal, I`ve not seen these on DVD but I would hazard a guess as they`re old the quality is not so good, so the superbit would be worth it!

You may have to make a decision - buying the discs for the extras (if any) or the quality.

I certainly wouldn`t replace and older feature packed version with superbit. On the other hand, when Dracula came out on superbit and I didn`t have it, I plumped for that version. Can`t really say if its "better" :/

In a word......no. Spend your hard earned cash on something else that you need. You will be very dissappointed when you won`t be able to see much of a difference to your `older` versions believe me!

That`s on R1 only though, isn`t it? The current UK R2 release of Labyrinth is fine anyway, and it has some really interesting features that the SUperbit would miss out on. Same goes for The Dark Crystal.
