DVDs & Films Forum
ok i`m after a Horror DVD that will scare the pants off me, not just blood and guts. but one that will be on my mind for days after.
So any recomendations?
The Hellraiser films are worth trying, Its the only horror films that I ever dreamt about! All them hooks and flesh, still probaly dated now, I have not been back to see and I won`t be either.
I don`t think I`ve seen a truly scary film since I was a kid, at the time the first 20mins of Evil Dead 1 scared the crap out of me! Same as Nightmare on Elm Street, but they don`t have the same effect anymore.
Hellraiser, as suggested above is more violent and shocking than scary, but if you`re into horror I`d agree it`s worth having, and is probably dated now.
Sixth Sense is seen by some as scary. I found this a good film, but it didn`t scare me. The DVD is good, and has some good extra`s.
I suppose everyone will say The Exorcist and Blair Witch, but I found them both boring and extremely over-rated (sorry everyone!).
If you want films to make you jump, go for Halloween, Final Destination, Etc..... As for a real scary film, I`d like to see one myself!
Most films i agree with above, do try Halloween if you`ve not seen it, scared me when i first seen it as a kid, then had to walk home alone from a mates house ...lol
Also Candyman, creepy film.. my wife had nightmares with that one ..
one that always stays in my mind was THE FOG which at the time i thuought was scarey but dont know if it will make it to dvd
another one that got me thinking is evil dead
jed the ned
RE: Whats the best horror DVD
What Lies Beneath is kinda creepy. Final Destination woth a look.
But l honestly don`t remember any film scaring me.. Ending of Blair Witch is uncomfortable!
Anything by Disney - their saccharine-sweet `middle class suburbia` trash, and their oh so cutesy-wutesy cartoons scare the bejesus out of me, because everyone thinks they`re the bees knees.
Disney are into Control big time - if you step out of line at Disneyworld and don`t do exactly what they tell you, the big Goofy and Donald Duck turn into monsters and stun you with a cattle prod, or something... (there has actually been some psychological research into the `surveillance and monitoring` done at Disneyworld - scary findings, I can say as a pseudo-criminologist !)
Give me Wile E Coyote any day - he rocks...
RE: Whats the best horror DVD
As a Horror fan, by all standards the most atmoshericly Scary Horror film of all time is THE WICKER MAN. Still to this day I find this movie genuinly frightning. And this coming from a 27 year old chap who has watched horror movie`s like The Exorcist, Blair Witch, Scream, Friday the 13th, Halloween etc... nothing can compare to The Wicker Man. I know that it is not available on DVD at the moment but I have to mention this.
Other horror flicks that get my vote are...
Don`t Look Now (Venice never looked so horrible !) Soon to be on DVD
An American Werewolf in London ( Classic, need I say more)
The Vanishing (Not the lame remake with Jeff Bridges but the 1988 version) Really creepy!
Dawn of the Dead (Great Zombie movie, great DVD with a very funny commentary from FX master Tom Savini) Region 1 and 2
Maniac (Really gory, really fun horror flick from the early 80`s) on R1 only
Eyes Without a Face (buy this movie on DVD from June 2001)
Cannibal Holocaust (A movie to watch only once, beleive me you won`t watch it again, very nasty...!, possibly the hardest movie to watch of all time, that`s a good thing, by the way!)
Enjoy....
Surprised nobody has mentioned this:
The Thing!
Its the only film that ever scared me and it is a damn good DVD too. Very chilling when you watch it at night when it is snowing outside..............brrrr
It rocks.
Certainly agree with doubledown about The Wicker Man. This classic is getting the 2-disc treatment from Anchor Bay, containing standard and extended vers. and a 5.1 soundtrack. It`s due for release sometime between June-August.
