Resident Evil: Apocalypse

dicanio (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 10th October 2004, 20:42

Saw this last night and was dissapointed by the lack of gore and action. Sure there was some but this is one of the chicks with guns films that you see more or less just for the action. It certainly seemed like they were trying to focus too much on the plot and try to make everything connect. The cast were all pretty much dreadful and seemed to just breeze through the movie without putting much effort in. The only positives were that Sienna whatshername looked great in tight figure hugging shorts and top. She was pretty much the only person to shine and the clothes helped alot with that but also her character had alot of attitude.
The first movie was a lot better, this movie seemed to be done just to introduce some new characters into the series and it is pretty obvious that there will be third (hopefully better) installment. If you want to see girls with guns, there are plenty of other movies out there. If you want to see zombies in action, Dawn of the dead is way better.

Oh no... I want to see Resident Evil: Apoc, I thought the new Dawn of the dead was shockingly bad, a real let down so maybe I won`t bother. :(

I`m more concerned by this statement...

My Review

GTA MOTHERF***ER!!

(best line in the film... well, amongst others)

Whatever the (admittedly passable) first film missed out from the origin of the species, this film more than makes up for. Paul WS bloody anderson is plainly regarded as the worst hack since Michael Bay, but Alex Witt has managed to redeem his plot departing Ep 1 somewhat, just don`t give Anderson any credit for it.

The sequel actually starts at about the stage where the commandos were actually entering the hive in the first film (by my reckoning anyway), the plot quickly speeds up and we`re again with the svelte Alice walking around Racoon City in nowt but a nightie & a shotgun. Those nasty Umbrella guys have furthered their as-yet-unknown agenda, but are hiding their cards at this bloody huge gate, where all the un-zombie-fied residents of RC are wishing to flee. Typically, one infected dad and his loving daughter have to go and ruin it for everyone. He dies and gets all bitey, she cries, the authorities over-react and everyone is shot at by automatic gunfire. Typical.

Very early on, we`re introduced to Jill Valentine. She`s well known from the video game (as is her outfit) but I`ve always felt that a film adaptation of anything should provide enough character introduction & development so that the uninitiated shouldn`t feel left out. She comes in, all guns blazing, and we`re left thinking `ok, she seems to know about the zombies, and doesn`t have a problem with firing her gun off in a crowded police station she appears to have just been suspended from..` but that`s it.

Ayneehoo... The new introductees (including a reporter with a handycam) get holed up in a church, along with 3 lickers (look `em up). As soon as all seems lost, Alice (Jolovich) turns up on a harley compatible and blows the lickers away with consumate ease. The troupe head for freedom, but on the way, are contacted by an Umbrella scientist in a wheelchair, Dr Ashford (I live in Ashford, and it`s weird hearing your home town being named so often) and in return for finding his daughter Angela, he will guide them through the zombie-infested streets using his laptop connection to the Umbrella-controlled city-wide cctv system.

Tis all seems to go swimmingly until Matt turns up. Matt, you`ll remember, survived until the end of the first film, but his scratch got all pointy and he had to be taken away to the special roon. Now he looks... exactly like he should do, what with him being nemesis & everything.

Well, enoigh about the plot, what about the film? It`s bloody good, actually. There are a few niggles, like the over-familiarity factor with Jill mentioned earlier, but it`s very well put together, and very clever when it wants to be. There are explanations of how the T-virus was developed (Think vx gas) and several nods to the computer game origin, which keeps the spods happy.

The zombie action is less than the first film, but it packs in the action more than enough to compensate. The Dobermans covered in BBQ sauce are back too.

There`s an ending. The film ends, in pretty much the same way the games do. There had bloody better be another one.
8.2/10

I know it`s been said time and time before but there are two types of people who will watch a film based on the Resi series

Those who love the games
Those who don`t

The first 2 titles in the series are PERFECT for a straight conversion from game to film (story wise, the dialogue always needed a bit of doctoring and the characters fleshing out). Those who love the games would get a real kick from seeing the characters and locations, and what a competent director could do with the Resi mythos. And those who are unfamiliar would get a great film.

The mind truly boggles why this approach was rejected. Although the first film is competent, it bears no relation to the series, with the exception of a few names and the would be Nemesis tyrant thrown in at the end.

Anyone rememeber when Romero was mooted for scripting/directorial duties of Resident Evil? and when Jason Patrick and Samantha Mathis were rumoured to be playing Redfield and Valentine in a faithful translation of the original game?

Throw in Val Kilmer as Wesker and i would LOVE to have seen that movie!

(I always felt that what is happening to the film franchise is kinda like someone adapting Shakespeare`s works and muddling up characters and recognisable elements just for the fun of it - Paul WS Anderson presents Hamlet & Juliet: Much Ado About Macbeth, anyone?)

Before the movie i saw a trailer for house of the dead. Did that look anything like the game at all, because it looked more like an island than a house. Whats the next game-movie translation gonna be? I personally would like to see a GTA or a Metal Gear Solid movie, even though MGS2 was like a movie anyway. Barring that, Time Crisis would also be cool

Spy Hunter (starring the Rock) and Doom are two the are pretty much certain and I`d bet my house that they`re both crap :( (ever the optimist eh?)

I`m not comparing Resi to the Works of Shakespeare. Just putting it in context for those who`ve never played the games.

Hey don`t knock Micheal Bay, so he`s done a couple of duff movies, but he has done some seriously cool movies such as Bad Boys 2, and The Rock.
