Farcical if you ask me. Still, it will probably get through, america being the way it is.

Many players have been programmed to allow skipping to be suspended anyway - I think it`s part of the original DVD specfication - It`s just that most manufacturers left in the ability to get around it, just like region coding, so it`s largely a thing of the past now.

Any new legislation about adverts will probably be circumvented with the same level of ease, so it`s not likely to prove anything to get steamed up about :D

The idea of the legislation is to make the ability to circumvent UOPs (User Operation Prohibitions - I think) prohibited by law - in the US. It won`t affect end users, but manufacturers will have to build machines for the US market that will have to adhere to their increasingly draconian copyright laws. I believe that already Tv in the US is bordering on the unwatchable because of advertisement revenue pressure. TIVO has had to change its operating system to deactivate fast-forwarding through adverts. I personally reckon the entertainments industry has another five years before the copyright laws implode on themselves, or consumer backlash derails the whole gravy train.

PUOPs (Prohibited User Operations) are a nightmare. Not being able to switch audio tracks on the fly to compare Dolby/DTS, or listen to a commentary, is a royal pain. I received yet another disc today(a Momentum title called Stage Beauty) that won`t let you skip the useless adverts beforehand. The worst ones are the discs that force you to watch two minute long propaganda from FACT.

The ironic thing is, a copy will not have these problems.

My Sony has PUOP`s disabled! Yippee!

And yes... A copy removes these anyway so anything the Americans do to make ads "unskippable" is a waste of time :-) Ha Ha! :-)

What does my head in, is that you can`t skip or fast forward the copyright warnings, also it p***es me off is when I play a Fox region 2 DVDs and I can`t skip the trailers, only fast forward. Surely it can`t be good for the player, when you constantly have to fast forward all the time. >:(

perhaps it`s about time we charged the dvd company and television company`s a fee for watching their adverts, you could sit around all day and make loads of money
