DVDs altered to reduce chances of mass panic?

Matthew Smart (Reviewer) posted this on Sunday, 5th December 2004, 08:30

I watched Get Shorty (R1, £3 at DVDSoon) the other day. I noticed in the accompanying booklet that the version designed for viewing on aeroplanes was altered, as airlines refuse to show films involving aeroplanes crashing (somewhat understandably...)

The character Leo narrowly escaped a `train crash` instead. So this has left me pondering on any other films that have been altered to allow them to be shown up high. Anyone know any?

I`m assuming BA just didn`t bother with Die Hard 2 or Final Destination... ;)

Maw, get the shotgun - there`s a fat, beardy bloke coming doon the lum!

A large number of airline versions are altered. In some cases to avoid references to plane crashes (though I think it was Virgin who played `Airplane` on its maiden commercial flight as a joke), and in others to avoid giving possible offence. E.g. if I recall correctly, on the commentary to The Mummy the director mentions that on the airline version the bodypainted Egyptian queen had more clothes CGI`d onto her for the airline version.

I was on a BMI flight back from Canada earlier this year, and they were showing (amongst about 12 other films) The Cooler. They kept in all the swearing, the full frontal nudity and the scene where the pregnant girl gets kicked in the stomach*. I was amazed, as these films were accesable by anyone on the flight. Good film though.

SPOILER:
It turned out she wasn`t really pregnant, she just had a pillow up her jumper, but you didn`t know that at the time :o !

Don`t think of yourself as an ugly person. Think of yourself as a beautiful monkey!

The beginning of Love Actually had the dialogue about the planes hitting the twin towers removed for the airline versions.

Better than that Jaws had to be stopped being shown on planes in the late 70`s as when the head appeared from the bottom of the boat, passengers would jump causing the plane to shake.

In-flight movies are a little more sophisticated on planes these days, with multiple channels available on personal screens fitted onto the back of the headrest in front. When we flew flew out to Oz a coiuple of years ago, we had XXX (violence), Insomnia (swearing and violence) The Good Girl (swearing and Jennifer Aniston`s baps) plus some others.

As the screens were induvidual, they could be programmed to restrict the material available should a child be allocated to a certain seat, when they`d have to put up with quality films like `Stuart Little 2` and `Like Mike`

On the trip from Sydney to Brisbane, however, it was the old school one screen for 50 passengers, where they played a heavily edited version of Goldmember

Agreed. Shaun of the Dead is FOTY so far, for me.
