Broadband.Is it worth it?

I am currently with AOL and they are offering broadband service for £34.99 per month. All I want to know is it worth the money?Other isps might be cheaper but I don`t really want to change.

I am using Pipex ADSL and am paying just under £24 a month. This is worth every penny. Although this is excellent value I don`t think I could justify spendning £35 a month for broadband.

Remember you also have to ask yourself what you will use it for. If like me you keen on downloading MP3 albums, DivX files, etc go for it. If you just like general web browsing I`d say save your pennies (or £35 in your case).

As sparkster mentioned it depends on what you actually do when on line. I am considering going to the fat pipe by the end of this year . The reason I am putting it off until then is that I am unsure what sites actually support it. Not being particularly techie I will keep viewing this sites boards and rely on other peoples experiences to judge when the time is right. At present I am with freeserve and am actually becoming a little bit p[at]dess off at the number of times I am disconnected and also their 2 hour limit is quite frustrating. If AOL matched the £13.99 that freeserve set I would jump to AOL tomorrow.

Choagy:-
I had the same problems as u have now...I was on freeserve and got so p***ed of being disconnected that i decided have Bt broadband installed.I basically pay £30 a month but buy god is it worth the extra money...i never get disconnected and u can just basically leave it all the time.
At the moment i`m having a problem with it and have had to use my old 56k modem which is absolute torture compared to the speed of broadband i`m used to.

The first 5 months I was on Broadband I used it 24/7 but now I find that I`m using it less and less as there`s only so much downloading you can do! I have just about every mp3 and mpg I want at the moment and only download large files every other week.

You may want to look at these companys that charge more for a monthly subscription but don`t tie you to a 12 month contract.

Having said all that I still love it :-)

For two years we have had the "free" 64k ntl cable modem connection as part of their triple package, but had to pay £9.99 a month rent for the modem. They`ve stopped doing the 64k connection so upgraded us to the 512K connection for an additional £10 a month ie £19.99 a month all in, bit of a bargain I feel, though it would have been nice if they had told/asked me in advance, rather than just sending the new upgraded bill without me knowing what I was now being charged for.

I still have ntl triple pack with 64k modem. The original charges were £ 20.99 p.m.
Now its gone up to £23.00 p.m.
I have the option of upgrading to 128k £ 15.00 , 512k £ 25.00 or 1M £ 50.00
An additional charge of £17.00 would apply to the above for basic tv/telephone service.
If I did upgrade, then I would not be able to downgrade to 64k.The lowest they would downgrade would a 128k.
So, I am sticking to 64k as it meets my needs.

If you are already paying £15 to AOL for the 56k connection then it is probably worth paying the extra £10 to go with Pipex ADSL.
Not having the telephone line tied up and instant connection is well worth an extra £10.
I have my ADSL modem router hooked upto to a Wireless Access point hidden away in my PC room and a wireless equipped laptop in the living room. I can pick up the laptop anytime I want for a quick email check or long surf session. I couldnt bear to go back to a 56k modem now. It is amazing how many times google gets fired up to check something on the web during the course of a week because its there and ready. No farting about going to the PC room, turning the PC on and dialing up etc.

All I know about NTL`s plans to phase out 64k is that they quietly did it to me without my knowledge and slipped another 10 quid onto one of the three bills they seem to need to send me for my integrated package, in the hope I wouldn`t notice. If they`d written to me and said " would you like to upgrade to 512k for an additional £10 a month" I`d have said yes, but it would have been nice to have been asked.
