Page 1 of Collision Course : the hand of fate

Did anyone else watch this programme on BBC2 tonight about the Southall train crash of 1997 ?

It freeze-framed the collision of the IC125 and the freight train by the second and showed how a decision taken 30 years ago probably saved the lives of a large number of people (using toughened glass), how a chunk of metal falling off one of the wagons saved at least ten lives in the first carriage, how the electrificiation of the Great Western saved another load of lives in the third carriage and beyond (because one of the wagons hit one of the stanchions supporting the overhead cables and caused the IC125 to slide to a halt) how swapping seats saved one woman`s life because the carriage was noisy, and how catching the train withj seconds to spare resulted in one passenger dying.

Scary how fate influences so many things in such a short space of time (8.5 seconds).

I`m not a rubber-necker : this was truly interesting (and spooky) stuff...very thought-provoking, especially as they compared how those 8.5 seconds would have been experienced by other people (eg shopping, working in an office, crossing the road, etc).
