Auto dial up (?)

andyrh68 (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 25th February 2003, 22:01

How do I find out which program is forcing an auto dial up when I start up my comp. Unless I let it dial up and connect, the dial up window pops up repeatedly

Download and install Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com ) which is a free firewall, and it`ll tell you when a program tries to access the Internet.

Alternatively, press Ctrl Alt and Del to see what processes are running : there`s probably a program in there trying to do an update check or something :-)

This may not work as you may get a message warning you that
"Another programme is attempting to use this device" but it may work.

Try disconnecting the phone line to the modem.
After doing this ignore the constant pop-up window and double click on your usual connection, Freeserve Anytime/ AOL etc.
You will see in the window that there is a box that can be checked or unchecked which enables or disables Auto Connect.
If it is checked simply uncheck it and that should be that.
I used to have mine set to Auto connect until I read a report in some PC magazine about certain programmes that changed your dial up numbers and re-routed them through an 0898/ Premium number instead.
I am not sure if that type of thing did actually happen but I thought better safe than sorry

Other than that it may be down to an automatic update utility for Windows 98SE/ME/XP or for another piece of hardware or software you have recently installed. I am not really sure about this but I dare say more enlightened individuals may know better.
As usual JMHO

PS Sorry Clayts, I was dis-connected before I could post and when I did post it was only afterwards I noticed you had already mentioned the possibility of an automatic software update programme.

Try clicking the start button, then Run...

Type msconfig

Click on Selective Startup and then remove the tick from Startup Group Items, this will disable your startup group and should stop anything dialing.

Or you could click on the startup in msconfig and remove ticks from items you are unsure of until it fixes the problem.

Went with clayts advice with ctrl -alt-del and found this fella to be the culprit: rasautou.exe What the goonie goo goo is this?
Incidently, I have zonealarm installed and I don`t have the auto connect box ticked (?)

Got this info from http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_modem&message.id=9591

Pasted the following from the page.

I found rasautou.exe this way in Windows XP. Click `start` and then click `run`. Type msconfig to the textbox and press enter. You will see a number of tabs (win.ini, boot.ini etc.). Choose the tab `services`. Scroll down and You will see the option `Remote Access Auto Connection -management` (or something like that, I do not use the english version of Windows). Deselect this option and reboot. I got rid of this pretty annoying service, which constantly tries to connect to the internet after booting Windows.
Not sure if this will help .

Thought we were onto a winner there choagy until I got another pop up saying:
You have used the system configuration utility to make changes to the way windows starts.
the system config utility is currently in diagnostic or selective start up mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time you start windows.
Choose the normal start up and undo the changes you made.

eek!

Sorted!
Think this is just a wrist slapping from XP - auto dial up is no more!
Cheers folks

There`s nothing like a quick fix :-)

I suspect it was some spyware or other : you might want to download the newly revamped Ad Aware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com and make sure there`s no other nasties lurking :-)
