Destruction of Amazonian rain forest

Fitz (Elite) posted this on Monday, 30th June 2003, 19:23

Saw something on the front pages of The Independent on Saturday which made me very angry and depressed at the same time. Apparently the incidence of logging in the Amazonian rain forest increased by 40%
last year and an area the size of Belgium was felled to make way for farms to grow soya crop. This was apparently at the behest of the EU and the soya is to feed cattle for crying out loud. When will the people who have charge of such things ever learn. The rain forest is host to a myriad of species and provides a lot of the planet`s oxygen. It seems to me that instead of dumping a few minor celebs in a sanitised rain forest in Australia. A few politicians and heads of corporations ought to be dumped in the Amazon rain forest maybe then they would learn that we just cannot go on destroying this beautiful and essential area.

End of rant #3 for the week !

I`m sure I read somewhere it was being felled at a rate of 40x football pitches every minute.

The fundemental problem with the world today is that we let politicians run it. They only need (and indeed the majority only actually have the) one qualification to get into office, and that is to be good at being a politician.

Presumably much of said destruction was to make the paper for the HUGE Harry Potter print run!

RJS, who do you propose we select to run the world, and how would they be chosen?

Sad when the most powerful, most polluting country in the world can`t even be arsed turning up to the summits.

How about the same system as now, but every elected representative is forced to wear a lie detector 24 hours a day, and we can vote on what questions they are asked via the net or your mobile phone, and they have to by law, answer them straight.

Thats the problem with politics and power. The people who are desperate to get into power are absolutely the last people who should be given the power. Basically we should have people in power who have NO ulterior motive for being there. So basically anybody that wants power should be disqualified.

But thats a toughie. And off course power tends to corrupt as well so should get rid of them every now and then.

About the Amazon its very sad. But the environment is suffering in other parts of the world. This will continue to happen until we think the only thing that matters is making a fast buck.

The yanks are the worst offenders of the lot for polution, they refuse because it would put alot of people out of work.

The US is the world`s largest greenhouse gas polluter, and refuse to sign the Kyoto Protocol.

That`s George Bush for you.
