Not that I`m complaining about the apparent uselessness of RCE but.....
Why the hell would the studios using RCE spend so much money investing in this, and then not test it on the machines they are trying to stop from playing them? Seems like a dumb-ass thing to do.
Is RCE just a myth, because I haven`t heard of many people having problems with them?
RE: Not that I`m complaining about the apparent uselessness of RCE but.....
I reckon the best way to combat those of us who import discs is to make the R2 release as good as or better then the R1. Personally I don`t mind waiting the extra months for a R2 release, just so long as it is as good as the previous R1.
RE: Not that I`m complaining about the apparent uselessness of RCE but.....
This has been talked about before on these forums and the conclusion is that it makes the big guys behind corporations rich. My view is that they should just manufacture DVD players mulitregion for the whole of the world and then just release region 0 disks BUT would that ever happen, no chance, capitalism at its greatest I`m afriad !
What would be interesting it to find out how many people have multiregion players and buy R1 disks, mainly because of the `extras` you get on them instead of R2 and they release the films on R1 before R2 etc, obivously there is a big market otherwise Play247 wouldn`t exist for example.....

Lol! What would be the point in making a multi-region player if there would only ever be one region!!!

Actually Play247 sell cheap R2 disks also, so it`s not just a case of they only exist because they supply the UK with R1 discs.
But yes I agree that the only way to stop people importing discs is to release the same version within roughly the same time at roughly the same price (I say roughly because of different taxs etc!). Not half the features with twice the price and six months down the line!

RE: Not that I`m complaining about the apparent uselessness of RCE but.....
What I meant was that we should have R0 instead of R1 R2 R3 etc but have the same features as R1 i.e. not cut like R2 and be released at the same time as R1`s etc etc...
Yes I know Play do R2, it was a figure of speech old boy !
Sorry 007 I should have been more specific in my `general` overview of my views !

This has happened before, and has worked well. The Jurassic Park discs came out all oevr the world on the same date, and went straight into the top 10 selling discs eevrywhere.
Blair Witch 2, despite being a crpa film, proved that a studio can release (what it thinks) is a major film all over the world at the same time, and still survive. Why they don`t do it all the time is beyond me.

I read somewhere that the main reason for different regional codeing is to do with the film distribution rights.
It seems that if the same film is released in the US and Europe, the money goes to different companies? (or something like that )

Thats a valid reason and probably one of the few worth us consumers understanding. With increasing globalisation however, this may become less and less of an issue. Only time will tell I guess.
