Page 1 of Michael Kamen - R.I.P.
General Forum
The composer Michael Kamen has passed away aged 55. Never knew the guy, but I loved his work. The Die Hard series, Robin Hood, the Lethal Weapons, Event Horizon, Mr Holland`s Opus, Last Boy Scout, Highlander... I could go on.
The thing with a movie`s musical score is that it work`s best when you don`t notice it. Inso much that it becomes so much of the onscreen action that if the 2 were separated, the parts would never be as much as the whole. I think Michael always managed to achieve this, in particular, the scene at the top of the Statue of liberty at the end of X-men as Wolverine is trying to revive Rogue, the lifts and falls of the score complemented the scene perfectly. There are a few more films still to be released that feature Michaels` work, and he will be sorely missed. Or to quote Terry Gilliam:
Quote:
We`ll miss him, if only for the noises he made...
That`s sad news :(
I liked his X-Men score and various other pieces of his work. Didn`t he do The Iron Giant?

I remember his eighties hit "Each time you break my heart". He came a long way from doing those Levis ads in the launderette...

His listed work can be found here you`ll be suprised at how many of his films you`ll recognise, and probably own. Personally speaking, when I do watch these films again, i`ll certainly be paying closer attention to the score. Funny how true recognition only comes after your death. S`pose the same could be said for every true artist.

and of course he conducted the San Francisco Philharmonic with Metallica. Truly a man that will be missed for his wonderful compositions.

I`m fairly up-to-date with composers in films, it`s just that Michael Kamen is one that I never really got in to. I liked Band Of Brothers though, great music for a great series.
But 55 is awfully young. I feel kinda similar now to when Ted Demme died, it`s just so out of the blue and makes you realise how fragile life is, even though you never even knew the person. I read the cause of death was "Cardiac problems" releated to Multiple Scelorsis (sp?).

Nick Kamen sang "Each time you break my heart" and stripped off in the Levis ad, not Michael Kamen, although Nick Kamens career died in the late 80`s.
Not to mention his superb work with Pink Floyd - most notably on The Wall.
A talented guy and no mistake.
S & M was a masterpiece, a well deserved Grammy for Call of Ktulu. Really gutting, no more live S & M sets.
He collaborated with Orbital on Event Horizon`s soundtrack - certainly an eclectic appreciation of all forms of music.
