New books needed...suggestions?

Miles (Elite Donator) posted this on Saturday, 21st February 2004, 17:22

Hi all

I`ve just run out of books to read and am looking for suggestions

Just finished the latest Andy McNab & Chris Ryan ones (very similar) - like that kind of thing. Plus, I`m a big Terry Pratchett fan and have read every single one of his books (including the not so good "Carpet People" :))...so am just waiting for the next one in May

So...any recommendations I can order??
Sci-Fi/Humour etc. all kinds of reading except biographies and historical factual stuff ...need some fantasy on my train ride in to work every morning! ;)

Cheers

I would go for any of Tony Hawks` books (no, not the skateboarder) - they`re hilarious. Also if you like crime, go for James Patterson.

Possibly a predictable response, but you could always have a go the Potters. Failing that, try Mark Billingham`s Sleepyhead, Scaredy Cat and his latest, Lazy Bones (The wife`s reading that one, I`m reading order of the Phoenix again)

Glad to see there`s still some faithful fans of Terry out there. Though Last Hero depended on the (admittedly brilliant) artwork of Paul Kidby, but Monstrous regiment showed a fantastic return to form, although the `twists` could be spotted miles off.

p.s. what`s his next book called?

Gordon Stevens does some good political/military thriller with SAS characters , terrorist etc.

Two of my faves are Karas Game (about Bosnia) and Peace On Earth (Israeli/Palestinian). Also quite like Moscow, USA by the same author.

All three made me want train delays so I could read a few more pages!

The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb is a must read! I think it`s more Fantasy than Sci-Fi though.

Alistair Reynolds for some hard (ware) SF and Ian Irvine for SF fantasy. Beware though you will need good muscles they be heavy books. Also note these guys tend to write trilogies and er quadrologies(!)

Personally enjoyed the Douglas Adams "Hitchhiker`s Guide to the Galaxy" trilogy in five parts. A Pan boxed set entitled "Douglas Adams - Mostly Brilliant".

I`ve just finished Mark `Chopper` Read`s first one: `Chopper` and am currently reading the follow up: `Chopper 2: How to Shoot Friends and influence People`. Both very funny in a scary, brutal kind of way.
I can also recommend `17 Watts` by Mo Foster for all the musos out there.

Do yourself a favour and check out William Burroughs - Naked Lunch (reading won`t ever be the same again).

Failing that mis-adventure, I love James Ellroy / Elmore leonard.
If you like David Lynch then read Kafka`s `The Trial` or `The Castle`.
Just finished `The Sheltering Sky` (Paul Bowles) - a masterpiece!
Mmmm - I could go on...but...

If you like Sci Fi comedy try Harry Harrisons Stainless Steel Rat series.

......and then tell me why nobody has made them into a movie.

More fantasy than Sci Fi but "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever" by Stephen Donaldson are a must
