Ebay Manipulation Reporting

shedaisy (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 28th August 2004, 14:47

I have just had an auction removed from ebay due to selling manipulation. ie i was selling a pair of trainers and added the words `NOT NIKE` i was unaware that this was not allowed as there are hundreds of auctions with descriptions like this. apparently someone would`ve reported my auction (WHY ME?) which i think is a bit petty not like i`m selling illegal stuff or something really bad. and ok it can be annoying when searching for items and you get other ones coming up but personally i don`t really mind that, as a seller i was just trying to maximise viewers. would you go to the bother of reporting this or havs it happened to you? just wanted to moan about it and let others know not to do this as they maybe unaware like i was. i am now off to report the 199 auction items that include the words "not nike" :p tennisgirl.

You were unlucky as there are loads of auctions that use this method.

But it does get on my nerves and im glad they are pulling them to be honest.

That`s daft, to be honest. If I was selling a Lada for example, what would I achieve by putting "not BMW" in the ad? I may get more viewers, but the extra viewers would be people who want to buy BMWs, not Ladas. Hence I`d be no better off, and I`d have p***ed off a whole bunch of people who aren`t interested in what I`m selling.

Good for you - and don`t forget "not adidas", "not puma"... :D

Hope you manage to sell your Tesco Value trainers, anyway. ;)

It may be annoying, but it`s interesting how Ebay act on some complaints but not others. Tell them people are selling a link cunningly disguised as an auction for the product, and they don`t care, but add a few extra words to your description and they close it?

One that annoyed me was a live CD that was being sold by one trader. He was selling it for £15 on "buy it now" with another £3 for postage.

At the end of his description he wrote "NOT AVAILABLE ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD". I had bought the very same CD direct from the suppliers, where all of them come from, for just over £8.

I sent a note to ebay saying that the guy is misleading buyers as he`s making it seem rare when they are in plentiful supply. I would have emailed people bidding on the item but as it`s "Buy it now" there is no way of doing it.

Needless to say they took no notice and he is still selling them to this day I think.
