Page 1 of Missing Web Site Graphics?
General Forum
Hi....
Is it just me...or are a lot of the graphics missing from these pages.....
I see lots and lots of those loveable little crosses!......
RE: Missing Web Site Graphics?
all ok at this end Allan, and Im only on a Win95 . IE4.72 machine...AND getting to the site through a firewall that would put hell to shame.
This is the second report of this so far I`ve had. (First was from a guy in Canada)
What ISP are you using? Do you know if they operate a transparent caching proxy?
What browser, version and OS are you using?
its only just started in the last couple of days......i`ve had no problems before......
I`m using Internet Explorer 6...and em...em...hmmm..Windows XP RC1..........my ISP is Blueyonder.....and i`m on a cable modem........
I`m unsure about the caching proxy.......
aha....just disabled my Nortons Personal Firewall...and all the graphics have returned......
any idea how i can view the pages from behind the firewall.....dont really want to turn it off every time I visit (which is a lot!!!)......
...I have been using Nortons for a while now...but this problem only just arose

A quick technical description of the changes we made this last week:
1) We created a special image only server last week on a different box and moved all the images (plus matching urls) to this new box except the banners which are still served by the original webserver
2) At the same time we limited image displays to local referrers matching *.reviewer.co.uk, which basically means any webpage which contains links to our graphics not being hosted on our domain will have broken links
3) Earlier this week I noticed anyone could use directory browsing to steal our entire images which isn`t good. So I further refined the local referrals mask to www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk only.
I would rather not have had to do this, but until I can find a way to disable directory browsing under thttpd (I might switch to another server or even use apache if need be) this is my only option.
However why this effects Norton Personal Firewall I have no idea.
Really ought to add here that I think NPF sucks, but then so do all personal firewalls imho. :)

Just got an email back from our Canadian reader with the same problem, and he`s using Norton Personal Firewall too. :)
RE: Missing Web Site Graphics?
So Robert, can you recommend a firewall us mere mortals can use? - I use Conseal from signal9 and it always manages to freak my machine out at least once a session.. - but having seen the *rap it manages to stop i reckon we all need one...... BTW no problem with the web graphics with it though... :)
Ray
I run with ZoneAlarm, which keeps out the nasties.
Great thing is, it`s totally free from http://www.zonelabs.com
Of all the ones I`ve ever used, only Conseal Signal 9`s PCFirewall really acted like a proper firewall.
